I just don't think you can beat black steelies with whitewalls. A chrome hubcap or chrome spider is also nice, but far from a necessity.

Both black and white steelies look good with a blackwall.

Black. If not black, then painted the same color as the body with at least a dog dish center cap. I don't like the look of a car that's black with a different colored wheel. Doesn't look right to me.

Here's my '53. Done with spray cans but with lots of prep work so they'd look nice.

The wheels on my truck are powdercoated. They had @ 3 coats of old paint on 'em and rusty on the inside. Cost me $40 bucks each......Sandblasted AND powdercoated. I dropped 'em off on a Tuesday and picked 'em two days later.
It's hard to beat the durability of powdercoating and it's very glossy....

Yea, what Josh said. Powder coat is the only way to go. Any color, cheap enough, you can't scratch 'em. These caps don't even leave any marks when you pull 'em off. I would never paint wheels again.

Oh well, except I did detail paint the caps with One Shot.

I think I'd be running some nice dust caps on those spindles on that pretty gold Model A zoomer.

IT's all in the prep. I took the tires off the wheels and sandblasted them. I used krylon spray paint, it 's been about 5 years and they still look good.

  20. Here's Dupli-Color gloss black. The wheels are pitted pretty badly but they look good a foot or two away.

I went rattle can on my first project with decent results. I had my current project's wheels powder coated. The cost ($125) was less than if I purchased the non rattle can paint and supplies.

  25. Heres mine, the white 34 and copper 46 pickup wheels are painted with enamel, the 41 maroon wheels are laquer. I will agree with everyone else, powdercoating is the way to go, my wheels will be powdercoated from now on...unless they are a custom color or something. Fuck rattle can, looks like shit no matter what.

  29. Spend a few extra dollars and get em sand blasted first. Prep and paint like any other paint job. I wouldn't powder coat em if you think you may ever decide on a color change.

I decided to paint my rims myself for a couple of reasons. One of them had some pretty nasty pits and since it's kind of a rare 41/2"er I had to fill them. That pretty much ruled out powder coating.

And here's the rest of the story.

One Saturday back in the late 60's I was browsing through a local paint supply store. They were having a clearance sale to get rid of some old inventory. Most of it was custom mixed paint that for whatever reason had never been claimed. Each can had a dab of the paint inside on the lid. I picked up a quart of Ditzler Ditzco Alklyd enamel called Jasper Green for a '52 Willys Aero for five bucks. The counter guy remembered mixing it for a local body shop some time before. I stashed that can of paint in a cool dry area without really having an idea of what I would ever use it on. I probably opened it two or three times during the next three decades just to make sure it hadn't dried up.When I found a set of Kelseys I knew exactly what color they would be painted. I took the can of paint back to the same auto body store to try and find a reducer that would be compatible with it. The counter guy told me that according to the initials on the Ditzler label his late father had mixed the paint. He was amazed that it hadn't broken down over the years and he sold me some reducer and wished me good luck. Now I'm pretty happy with my period correct painted rims.
