I have the oppurtunity to buy an original kit to convert a 1937 flattie nto a compressor. I have heard of these where 4 cyl. are firing and the other 4 are actually compressing. This kit makes the whole engine a compressor and I have know fuckin' clue how? Does it use an external power source or what. the guy has no clue HELP
Sounds like one of those Popular Mechanics projects from the 50's. You might try a Public Library that has a good periodicals section. You'd be surprised how helpful a good librarian in a large library can be!
You mean all 8? Yeah this setup evidentily usea all 8 as compressors. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=014&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=330078757687&rd=1,1
Probably worth some bucks just for a investment. O had a rental I maintained whileour rotary was being overhauled. Was a 460 ford, one side had plugs and ran like a motor. The other side had lines with check valves in lines that went to the tank. Oversimplified, but block the intake so as to eliminate the fuel from the air... And a different cap to insure the spark fored allm 4 cylinders... Crude but works, and that kit is a keeper not because it is efficent or practical nowdays but because it's histoirical... and someone wants it, so it.s trade stock for hot rod parts.
I wanted to do this with a v8 60 ? buy it and post some pictures ! how mutch is it ? hell I will buy it . if your not going to! pm. me if your not going to buy it . Casey.
I had a flarthead air compressor in about 1968 that was built by a company named Schramm. 4 cylinders compressed the air and 4 cylinders powered it. I believe Schramm is still in business, at least they were a few years ago. They made a lot of them in later years out of 6 cyl engines, 3 for power and 3 to compress. All of the construction air hammers you see at road constructions jobs are powered by a compressor of a similar type. Frank
