Just think... a Festiva body on '32 rails and open red wheels, wide whites, flat black, Mexican blanket seat covers, power coming from solar powered electric motor or what ever....could happen! Besides 50 years from now I'll be 112 years old so I don't think I'll much care one way or the other!

  2. I won't be around to see it - but - my boy will be sitting in the Chevy telling his kids that once upon a time you could buy gasoline & that was what made this car run. This country will be like the "Planet of the Apes" movies - remember those?

I hate to say it guys, but demographics will play a much larger role in what hot rodding, custom cars, etc, will look like in 30-50 years, i.e,one generation than the price of gas. Based on North America’s declining birth rates and levels of immigration, our continent will be mostly South East Asian, East Indian, Hispanic and Chinese. Living in Toronto, one of the most ethically diverse cities in Canada, I can tell you that our hobby is in trouble. Yeah, there are a few tuner kids from these communities, but generally theirs is not a car culture. They are more practical than we are, especially the first generation. They tend not to be mechanically inclined and most view cars as appliances. The ones with money buy new European or Japanese luxury cars.

So what will our hobby look like in the future? The classics, high quality, traditional, original steel rods and kustoms will be in the hands of a few very wealthy collectors who view them more as an investment more than a passion. A few of us may pass on the torch to our kids, but unfortunately there are not enough of us. If you think I’m kidding, ask anyone tried to sell a project, rebuildable engine or partially completed car lately. Investment quality, desirable vehicles go for insane prices, amateur restorations sell at a discount and you can’t give away projects compared to what they cost to get to where they are.

The hot rods in 30-50 years that the young generation can afford will be along the lines of tuners today. Many bolt on accessories to make them look different and HP improvements for those with more $$ to spend. I can’t see people tripping over themselves 30 years from now to soup up a 2008 Dodge Charger with a 6.1L Hemi or 2007 Shelby Mustang. The gas that is left will be too expensive to run regularly and likely only available at select stations with a permit.

I as a 25 year old don't see many modern cars becoming as beloved and desired as hot rods, kustoms, and muscle cars. I don't know what stigma surrounded hot rods in the 60s, but I now what I (and alot of people) think when they see an 87 IROC-Z, and it isn't a warm feeling of what a great car... It's "I bet that guy's gonna go buy some Budwiser, comb out his mullet, and beat the everlovin' shit out of his wife later." The 60s Mustangs are generally liked by almost everyone, but get into the 71-73's and they're not nearly as well liked and popular, which will likely be the fate of Fox Bodys, considering that I'm the generation that would look back at them nostalgically, and I for one think they are cheap-lookin' ugly little Escort-like things. The 80's/90's cars don't have the "love" of the general population like the old cars do. Sure, some will, but in general, I can't really think of 1 later model car that I actually DESIRE, even the nice, high performance ones don't really have the personality that will make me look back and smile at. Sure I will look back on plenty and say "yeah, that was a nice fast car," but they just don't have IT enough for me to say "man, that was my favorite car when I was a teenager, I gotta have one now!"

  7. Do you think the Chinese will appreciate traditional hot rods?

  8. Whatever happens I'm sure my dumdass will sell whatever parts I have gathered over the years about 5 to 7 years before they really become the "must have items" (like all the magnesium wheels I got tired of tripping over and sold about 10 years ago):( Of course if I keep this stuff, no one will want it anyway. One things for sure, my kids will have a 55 Chevy and a 40 Ford to do with whatever they want when I die ' cause I ain't selling them!:D

This is no shit - the notch-back Fox bodied cars have already turned the corner - a clean notch-back coupe with a 5-speed will bring $6-7k here in Florida. The 'verts and hatchbacks are not far behind them.
