I know it's not too traditional, but the birth of a new rat motor is still special. This is the 496 I am building for my 50 Chev PU.

That dosen't look like a rat motor to me. Wouldn't a rat motor be a rusty old flathead....Rat dose not = cool..

Nice hi perfomance engine tho :D

Now your talking. I started working on and racing big block Chevys when they first came out. As much as I love SBC's the big block is my favorite.
Did you use the supplied thrust washer behind the cam gear of substitute a Torrington roller bearing? I was going to find a substitute Torrington for my 427 then you'd have bearings on both the front and back of the cam gear. Just wondering.
Also did you drill a small hole in one of the oil galley plugs behind the cam gear to give a little extra oil for the gear drive?. You don't need much just a few thousands dia will do it and I've found it doesn't effect oil pressure. The big block oil system is based on volume anyway so what little you bleed off doesnt effect the performance of the system but it sure helps the chain and/or gear setup.

this gear drive came with a thrust bearing.
shop was closed so shop was empty, never enough lifts.
a clean shop is a happy shop :)
and for all you "car kulture" people, a mouse motor is a chev small block and a rat is a big block, better go check your cuffs

"Thats a cute mouse motor". Just messing around, in both posts for those who didnt catch it. The only thing that could make that motor cooler would be some wild headers.

Dang, you Mercedes boys don't mess around.

What block is that. I'm fairlynew to the big inch motors. But not so new that I didn't know what a rat motor was! I know they go well into the 5's, and the 496 has been around awhile. But I hope to be shopping for one before long, so I'd like to follow your build.

And which Brodix heads are those?
