Go for the early sixties that way you can keep the alternator.. They were selling them for cheap on e-Bay with a nice polished case! I bought one for $65. Then I had my alt guy go over it, he said it wasn't rebuilt to well but the case was beautiful!!!

I’ve never seen rochesters for dual quads. I wonder How they run compared to WCFB’s?

About the same. Remember they were interchangeable to the same year car. Tuning a WCFB because of needles is easier if you have them.
I like the tops raw aluminum and the centers the Alodine gold but it’s tough to do today.
I’ve got a few small base ones, they were used on early Cadillacs.

Looks like the old Hedmann Headers that go into exhaust. No collector.

  21. We used to use Rochester 4 jet carbs for 2x4 setups. They were a small square bore carb. They were never as cool as WCFBs but they were cheap and plentiful.

Cadillac, Packard, and Pontiac ALL used them on factory dual quad set-ups.

When properly set up, they run every bit as well as the WCFB Carters. However, in the day, the Carters were favored by most, as the Carters had more printed information plus more aftermarket parts. Rochester catered only to the O.E. whereas Carter and Holley catered to whomever would spend money on product.

The 4G series are EXCELLENT carburetors. While probably an unpopular opinion here, the Rochester 4G series were much more reliable than the early Holley 4150's; just did not have the factory parts or tech support.

  24. The 4Gs were excellent carbs. Most people would not know the difference actually. I think we used 4 jets because we were familiar with them and they were like fleas on a Red Bone. ;)

I put a single 4G on a 283 once, maybe it was a 4GC? I had it, needed a carb and it worked like a champ. I don't recall if it was difficult to bolt on. 50 years and the fog of the '70s makes some of that stuff a little hard to recall.:eek::D

Lots of sbcs came with 4GCs from '56-'66. A 4G is one with a factory manual choke, such as came on the '65-'67 pickups with 327s. I've run several, and never had a problem with them. They're just not what the "cool kids" ran, that's all....and that could be due in part to that, for whatever reason, Corvette engines(yeah, I know, they're ALL Corvette engines) never used 4GCs. Same intake manifold, but the 'vettes always came with WCFBs instead.

  26. I just could not remember if it was manual or automatic choke. Like I said lots of water under the bridge, not all of it potable. :D

  27. yes, but I used a band clamp to a matching pipe size exhaust.

Yep the 70s were a wonderful 10 minutes from what I can remember.

  29. Two decades marked by the same sentiment. The '60s and the '70s. If you remember either you were not there. :D
