It now makes sense why the chassis number didn’t match anything I’d ever seen before. Perhaps he bought a car from a junkyard with no title, and Ca. issued him a new number? The new number is stamped in the rail directly below a welded bead that probably was the original Ford number. Kinda cool history!

So, it appears that the stock ‘33 rear axle ratio may be a 4:11, and coupled with the 283, gives me a 55mph top speed! What was going to be a quick and dirty engine swap has turned into one hiccup after another. Welcome to Hot Rodding 101.

While test driving, Eli noticed that the interior was filling up with fumes, and realized that a 283 should have a road draft tube at the back of the block. This had been plugged on this engine, so he found a kit from Classic Industries, that routes it to the carb base. Problem solved. With the height of your rear tires a 4.11 should be no problem for a 283.

This is way cool. Since you put the PVC line in from the old draft tube port, where does it get intake/breather air for that and and where is your oil fill? I would have assumed a tube on the front of the intake but I don't see one.

Great question, and there is a breather / oil fill tube at the front of the engine.
We had to shorten it, and it sits alongside and just below the generator.
    I’ll get a better photo tomorrow. 1DA72D5F-7C02-4BDF-A011-261646BBE15F.jpeg

    Two things Al.
Is the oil baffle in the valley, and I'm thinking a vented oil fill cap might not allow enough air flow through the engine.

I don’t know, Denny, but before we put the pvc in-line, the interior filled with smoke.
It does not do that now. It’s pretty low performance.
    More pics tomorrow.

I have two cars powered by '57 283 engines. Both have pcv valves between the hole in the rear of the block and the carburetor base. Both have the canister in the engine valley and both have vented breathers on the oil fill tube. There is no reason why it shouldn't work on the '33. IMG_0076.jpg

Yup - tucked away for sure. Thanks for the info and pics. This is just too cool with the "originality" of the parts being used. I am thinking the oil baffle under the intake in combination with the stock style oil fill/breather should be work together but not 100% sure. I plan on doing a similar thing with a PVC on my 283. Fumes going out the exhaust vs. a road draft tube. Many years ago I was fortunate to find an original draft tube fitting that goes into the rear block hole so I just need to get a PVC fitting and some hosing. Keep up the great work! Great thread!!

It starts instantly, and will sit and idle for 1/2 hour without overheating.
