Ok, this may be unobtainium! But I have need for these gears and am not finding them in any of the company websites. Wonder if any of you have suggestions on where I could look, or if any of you happen to have a set just laying around! Thanks PHil
Try Gevos gears in New York he had the 2.56 Pontiacs I needed. If you know of a Bonneville guy near you give them a try. They seem to buy them up but it’s a pretty steep gear for a lot of them.
A long shot but you could try Bill Thomas Enterprises in San Bernardino, CA https://billthomasenterprises.com/about/
Many years ago I pulled a 9 inch out of a 78 T-bird (the big one, before it got small) that had a 2.47 gear. That 2.47 is the tallest 9 inch gear set. There are also some 2.50 gears used in 9 inch.
^^^^ The 2.47 is the tallest gear set Ford used, and only for a few years in a limited number of models. Before a local wrecking yard closed, the owner let a few of us salvage what we wanted for cheap. While I targeted narrow 8" rears, a couple of my friends got all the 9" ones in the yard. I will check with them. Shipping for a complete center section would be pricey though.
This was 6 yrs ago, maybe you've seen it, some suggestions in there... https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/2-47-2-50-9-inch-ford-gears.1007602/
If you can't find what you want or putting the whole set up together from scratch is too expensive, you might look into a Winters quick change set-up. Not cheap either, but would imagine you can get ratios in the right neighborhood. Also, can't remember details, but I think Lincolns used a slightly larger 9+ rear that I believe will fit a 9" housing. The problem with them was that they had a high (low numerically) gear ratio like you are looking for. Don't know if posi is available. Here, I found a picture of one.
I have a set of both a 2.47 and a 2.50 nine inch gears. Believe it or not I run a 2.47 RAR in my RPU drag car. [That thing will hook in a mudslide and with a high stall converter it is deadly consistent.] These are spares for my drag car, but I could be cajoled into parting with one set. PM me.
As a Ford wrench in the eighty's the only thing I remember seeing those on are 1977 to 1979 thunderbirds and cougars. Probably the only other thing using a nine inch was the f-150 and f-100 pickups.
I have a nice 9" 2.50:1 set left over from our Bonneville projects. P.M. me if you need it and we can work something out.
Sorry for the late reply here... I've now run into another problem. I measured my width wrong and now I've got a 9" axle housing and shafts that are too wide. If its not one thing its another!! trying to figure out how to make lemonade out of this mess now. Have to get back to you on those gears.
Thanks, yes that may be the route I have to take, but having a bigger checkbook is a thing too. LOL!!
I had a factory Ford gear that was about a 2.5:1 back in the '90s. It was a real airplane gear. I do not know what it would have come in, maybe a Lincoln. Ford performance may be a good place to look. If they have one it is not going to be an online deal, you are probably going to have to pick up the phone and call.
Phil, Jeff's Auto Parts, Tucson, 520-623-2600 and Torgerson Wrecking, Chehalis WA, 1-800-647-7898 both say they have one for $100. Car-Part.com is your friend Searched for 1978 Lincoln Mark "R&P only" using 85377 for a zip (Results) (Scroll) You can use your computer to search through thousands of junk yards. Mike
Tucson is a lot closer to you than Washington State! I bet you have reason to head that way now and again, or you do now!
I don't know, I used Car-Part to find spindles at a yard on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada and had them shipped to scenic Maryland, USA . I just scrolled through the list looking for 2.47's & 2.50's. I think the sort was by grade, rather than distance. There are pages of results. About 2 % of them were low numerical. It's worth a look. Mike
That's funny, I live on Vancouver Island, and travelled to near Baltimore a couple years ago... I could have brought 'em down!
