1946 Fageol dual coach special with dual offies.

 

Carl Grimes Fiat was ahead of it's time with the narrow rear axle, tilt body and balanced proportions, as far back as 1957. I have a shot of it at the Nationals that year, in Oklahoma City.

 

Marty, seems Carl Grimes was always doing things a little differently or even alot differently. In a good way I think.

 

Joe, your words prompted me to read more about Carl. I didn't know he was the first entry for the Nationals, at Great Bend Kansas in '55. Read more here.

Here is a picture from 1955 of Fred Sibleys "White Lightning" Allison V-16 dragster. Fred gave me this picture! He lives about three miles from me and at 84 still goes out in his shop everyday and tinkers on stuff, most of it being jet-engine related. His property is a fun place to look around and Fred does not care that you do. The last time I was there I counted over 30 old jet engines sitting around in the weeds. There are old jet-dragster cars, a tractor puller with an opposed 900ci V-6 that came out of an Army tank, old sprint cars, Model A Fords, motorcycles, a bonnyville car, a 1948 firetruck that used to be his tow vehicle, and more. Up until 3-4 years ago Fred still had the White Lightning car. View attachment 4464702

I think that most of us have a mind set that does not allow for things that are different or not common. I have this thing that runs around in my head Common V uncommon when it comes to traditional hot rods.

I got no pics for you but in the SF Bay Area (and I don't doubt other places) for example there were hot rods running around sporting disc brakes and radial tires by the later 50s and early '60s. The brakes and the tires came from euro sports cars. Not common but it was being done.

 

Remember it well. Bought the AMT model kit (double kit with the XR6 and a '27 Model T tub) at a kid and built it. Wish I still had it.

 

Yes, that is why I use the term period correct hot rod you can use some very uncommon parts (flathead six engines come to mind) and still have a car that looks like it rolled out of golden era of hot rodding/racing.

Ak Miller's El Caballo I and II

 

Not quite sure this fits within the boundaries, BUT no denying for 1964-5 this pushed the limit. Art Arfons' Green Monster. Delete if it doesn't fit the thread.

 

Fabian Valdez's 34 tudor chopped channeled Y block highboy.
A rodder in Germany bought this car from me and ask, should I paint it differently. He did not listen and he painted it gold with black and white huge scallops...in my opinion / sickening.
I was a total DA to sell this ride.

 

I got an idea that my crosley pushed the limits in the late '40s and early '50s when it was built and raced. How many guys would have started with a new car ('48 crosley) and channel it over an A chassis. LOL

 

If I was going to build a copy of a car (personalized of course LOL) this is the car that I would copy. I have always had a thing for this car. There is just something about it that I have always liked.

Lest we forget the Track Roadster of all Track Roadsters, The Spalding Special, built in '48. It ran at Bonneville, the lakes as well as was killer on the ovals. It's light weight construction, 4 torsion bars, live axle rear, combined with a 12 port Chevy, with Hilborn Injection. It was like an Indy Car with a T body. I built a copy for Pat Ganahl, and just got a text from his son Bill, he was loading it up to take it to his shop and finish it.

 

Two that I like are:

Kent Fuller-built Magwinder. ~'58? Last I heard was in Garlits' museum. Only downfall of that car is the acvw trailing arm front suspension(not because it vw). Light, but the castor change w/suspension travel had to make that thing an evil witch. I do wish he would've put a magnesium tube dropped axle on it back then. Might have lasted a bit longer.
Other one is the Halibrand Shrike. ~'64? About the only things not mag on that car were the tires, fuel & electrical wires.
. Cast mag bulkheads, body skin, usual Halibrand equipment, etc.

Always thought this was pretty unique, one half of a 1914 Hispano-Suiza airplane engine powered dragster.
