Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. This old petrol station is on Eureka Street in Ballarat. Eureka Street is an historic street in Ballarat. 'Eureka' (from the Greek for 'I found it' or 'I have found it') refers to the discovery of gold in the district in 1850/51, sparking a gold rush that attracted fortune hunters from elsewhere in Victoria and other parts of the country and from overseas. A few years later there was a miners' rebellion against the authorities; the miners erected a stockade not far from the where the service station is located (hence the 'Stockade' name of the station). Soldiers attacked early one morning; more miners than soldiers were killed. The surviving miners were later acquitted of charges of insurrection/treason. The Eureka Stockade rebellion is a famous event in the European history of this continent. [There used to be a small Ford factory within a few hundred yards of the 'Stockade Service Centre'; the empty/derelict Ford factory building is still there today - or it was the last time I checked ... ] 012.JPG

    Hello,

Having been one of the only gas stations in this part of a coastal city has is own history. When we used to drive down PCH or Highway 1 from Long Beach to all points South for our surf adventures. There were two places to get gas that were our favorites. The old gas station in the southern part of town was just in the right place before we got on the new freeway going South. It was in a part of town with another gas station a few blocks farther South. But, this one was near several fast food places and a small market/deli.
    upload_2022-11-17_3-48-16.png
It has been several different businesses since being one of the original coastal city’s gas station. It was convenient and less expensive than the name brand stations in the Northern part of the city’s coastal drive.

Before the pandemic blues that struck all over the USA and the world, small businesses had a great time helping others do some work on old trucks and hot rods in various neighborhoods, everywhere. One of the nicest places was a converted gas station in a coastal OC city. They played to a market, but it is a small one, due to the fact that the buying market has 50% of its clientele as blue water and fish.
    upload_2022-11-17_3-51-1.png
But, the coastal city hot rod scene was kept alive by a lot of people and their builds. The gas station is/was now an automotive repair business and was so until the throes of the pandemic shut down. It looked empty, as it does, today. It was sad to see the various hot rods and trucks no longer on the lot or mechanic’s stalls. The pandemic hit on all fronts.

The last usage for the old, but cool gas station was an auto repair business that had ties to hot rods and old cruisers. During the time it was here, the business was doing well with the locals. But, during the pandemic, things started to not work out like a lot of businesses all over the place. So, it sat idle and now, it is for lease.

Thank you for your service at this location since 1961 during our surfing era.

Use to be a lot of those old stations up here in rural Wisconsin in the 70s, but more interstates and major highways by past the towns along with the convivence store/truck stop stations and in the 80's, early 90's the big push to clean up ground contamination by removing old tanks and the cost of replacement sent most of the old stations to the dumpster and the property used for something else. They call it progress, but most people wish for the good old days! lol Larry

    Hello,

The last vestiges of one of the earliest gas stations closest to the Camp Pendleton’s northern end of the property. It is about 2.5 miles. It is/was on the entrance to the I-5 Freeway South towards the San Onofre gate.
    upload_2022-12-8_4-23-33.jpeg
When we used to travel to the Southern most parking spot for the Trestles surfing area, this was the last gas station for supplies or repair. If we were going farther South to the San Diego County surf spots, it was handy to gas up here. Then get right on the I-5 onramp next door, for the longer drive South.
    upload_2022-12-8_4-11-6.png
Over the years, easy access to the freeway was a plus and minus. The plus is that it was convenient for the last gas stop on the way South to San Diego beaches. If one needed parts or gas after the San Onofre or Trestles Surfing adventures, it was close by. But, over the years, other “not so reputable” people had the same idea. Rob the gas station and within 5 minutes, one was a long distance away on the freeway headed South.

This caused some concern for the regular gas up folks and then another name brand gas station opened up a short drive down the highway. As the business got less due to a loss or possible loss, the old station closed down and opened up with a new owner.
    upload_2022-12-8_4-13-8.png
Then after several months, closed down again and finally for over several years, stayed empty with a green/beige chain link fence + cover to keep out the local wanderers.

Easy off for driveway access, prior to closing. Taken from the I-5 freeway off ramp to Coast Highway or El Camino Real in this part of the South Coast area.

When the old (one of the city’s original gas stations) was in business, it was easy access from the southbound off ramp, right into the gas station driveway and when finished filling up with ice, Cokes, gas and snacks, get right back on the freeway heading South. “Easy off, easy on…” or so, Mr. Miyagi told Daniel-son in the early Karate Kid movie!!! Ha!
    upload_2022-12-8_4-15-3.png easy on… headed South

Very sad news, a dentist’s two story office building is now in the grading/building phase and will compete with another 50s diner across the street that will also get torn down.
    upload_2022-12-8_4-20-28.png
There must be a lot of dental problems in this vicinity to warrant two dental office buildings within a baseball throw away from each other. Hot rod history goes down the “spitting bowl” in either location. (historical dental sink…) Eeeww!

  17. An old gas station in the town I work in. Still operating. Got gas there this past week so took a pic.

A friend of mine turned this one into a recording studio. In Marshall, NC. I'll have to ask my dad if he has any pics of his granddad's filling station. It was converted to a house at some point. Pretty sure it's still standing, but it's been decades since I was there.

  28. Some from a recent road trip. I remember stopping at this Garage back in 1979 in my 37 Willys to try and clear the blocked radiator while on a trip. JW
