Has anyone had problems removing a Model A Head? Saw a neat trick on a TV show a few nights ago. Remove all four spark plugs, cut two lengths of rope about two foot long then stuff one in #1 & #4 cylinder while at BDC. Crank the engine over and the head just popped up, thought it was a neat quick way of doing things, no danger of chipping a head or block.

I`m still here, had a huge disappointment with my "B" rebuilt engine but I will surpass that issue. On the flip side my "B" engine into an "A" is complete and the clutch system /brake system works well - been working on my car transporter as it`s going to be my daily as well as my A coupe transport for pendine and my current car is sold pending collection!

Nice to know everything doesn't have to be buffed aluminum with fins and then chrome plated.

I have loosened the nuts on the head about an 1/8” and cranked the engine over without the rope.
    Same effect.
Guess the compression helps it to pop.

After that, I slide a couple ratchet strap through and connect them to an engine hoist.
    Comes off fairly easy.
Or yeah, they also make a head puller.

I know it’s not the banger that’s usually discussed on this thread, but I got lucky on and found a Chevy II engine locally for almost nothing. I plan on putting it in my stock-ish model A with a 39 trans for a quick doubling of the horsepower.
The T body and bed came with it.
‘I’ll use the A motor with the T body and make a little hopup.
Now I just need to find a decent chassis.

Bob, that is exactly the idea. Not a lot of aluminum, except the warford and maybe the intake. But more brass, cast iron and steel.

    Hello,

I’ve been lurking here for years, collecting knowledge and parts. If you guys don’t mind, I have some questions that seem most appropriate for here rather than Fordbarn or Facebook.

Are the numbers on a Cragar head the date code?

Was there a Cragar B side plate with a hole for the fuel pump?

Was there a Cragar aluminum timing cover?

If my B block checks out, should I run a SCAT crank or what do you guys prefer?

Will a B motor and V8 trans with Cling adapter(s) bolt directly into an A chassis, specifically will the torque tube need modified?

Am I using this forum correctly? This is more complex than Facebook, and the content is higher quality.

    Thank you Monthly Banger Thread!

    Scott,

You're using the forum correctly and by the looks of your project you have definitely come to the right place. I cannot answer your questions, but I am positive that other members, far more experienced than I, will be able to answer your questions over time.

    Welcome!

4bangerbob : Well, You just blew the top off the page!!!! PLEASE load all the detailed information about this project on this thread!!!! VERY INTERESTING!!! Question for the rest of the 'banger crowd: as long as we keep the crankcase, crank (& possibly cam) does this count as an "overhead conversion", both here & for X-class racing??

Some people would have cleaned the bottom half of the B block you cut the top off of, but there are guys that weld rusty sheet metal too. Your shop to do with as you please.

  22. 32B5C1E6-195D-4A8A-9B5E-A8B701EF5C0F.jpeg I meant to post earlier. Went to help Craig at RKE Engineering skim his block… It was an old BF engine with good white metal. He’d been donated some aircraft cylinder heads. Plan is to make a deck plate and new cylinders. Trimmed the block down leaving the cam tunnel and lifters in place. Going in a little single seater. He’s making barrels next.

  23. The original aero engine is a 2.2 litre flat four. Similar bore size and a 3” stroke. Craig is planning to make nikasil coated aluminium barrels. Around about 4” to use a smallblock piston.

4bangerbob & hotrodfil : Could you PLEASE TRANSLATE OUT OF "FAKEBOOK"!! This conversion looks interesting, but it might as well be printed in N. Korean or Farsai if we are not "indentured" to "FAKEBOOK"!! HINT: A LOT OF US REALLY DO NOT LIKE "FAKEBOOK"!! I do hope I was clear enough??

That would be great, thank you.

  28. The deck was fine although we found a crack in the water jacket whilst is was coming apart. Took a good few cuts to get through the deck 3mm at a time...
It's a BF block. Small bore - you can see the rod clearance slots in my first picture. So pretty much useless for anything. The valves are angled closer to the bores like the flathead V8. But it came with a counterbalanced crank and good white metal.

  29. Does anyone have knowledge on this distributor drive stand on this KONG cover?
I think I took the photo from one of the SoSS magazines, but cant find which one.

I've got a blank, and am looking to make some sort of drive gear for it off the camshaft. 288503714_582161710094860_4513811346712342088_n.png

Going through a friend’s old photo album this past weekend and saw these. He thought it was at Pate 1989. I know it’s a rare piece but I didn’t think the asking price would be that high at that time. Wonder where it is now? Speedway maybe?
