Technical 40-41 Ford Pickup Hood Support Question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by TomT, Nov 11, 2022.

  1. Still working on my wife’s 40 pickup build. As many of you know I am using all 40-41 sheet metal save for the cab which is a 42-47.

Looking at my picture there are two holes on the cowl lip to mount the hood supports. So for those who are using/have used a later cab for a 40-41 pickup build which hole did you use? Or did you have to drill one? And if so, what is the measurement from of the top of the lip to the center of the hole?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I haven't done this and don't have any answers for you. Just wanted to let you know my '46 uses the bottom hole. Good luck!

  3. Hey, thanks. Just not sure when using the 40 hood …..

The way I understand it it as far as 40 coupe’s and sedans go, the hood support bracket has a tab on it that uses both holes

like at the bottom of this picture

  5. The 40-41 Ford pickup uses the 39 Delux hood support arms without the tab - it’s just a single hole .

Yeah, see I was unaware of that.
    Good information, thanks

  7. I think it’s the top hole. You can check by putting the hood on the hinges then pooping the hood up with a pole. The support arms will be completely extended on their stops. Put the bolt in the hood and see which one is closest. It its on the top hole and it feels like to much pressure, move it to the bottom hole and the spring will have to be stretched less to close the hood, but the full ope position will be slightly lowere. Bu like I said. I believe it’s the top hole.

Just a side note...the Drake catalog doesn't list it, but the hood support arms on the '42-'47 are the same as used on the '40-'41.

  9. The 42-47 trucks are different according to Drake ….

I can send you a measurement from my stock 40 pickup from the firewall lip to the hole if you like, all stock springs and hinges.

It is 5” from top of rail to centerline of bolt hole. also the fender only attaches at the bottom bolt hole out of 3 in the cowl. 4204B335-5996-4390-B67F-FEDB4E6F0002.jpeg

^^^^Excellent pics @buzz4041 . I don't want to go all Capn Jack Sparrow here but would you be kind enough to tilt that camera up and show me the hood attachment points? I have never had the hood on it so I am in the dark.

47 cab.jpg I looked at my 47 cab and it has the hood hinge supports from the top hole in this cab FYI. That was from when it had a 47 hood on it.

Yes it is current. I carry this one in the back of my home away from home living quarter trailer and tinker with it in
the evenings after work. It is a tight work area now since puting cab on the chassis, but I keep plugging away at it. That is why I pay so much attention to your thread Bandit.
