    Morning all,
Thought I would share this. I feel like I have a pretty good overall knowledge of automotive stuff, old, racing, people and such and every once in a while I stumble across something I have never seen or heard of before. Behold a vintage Chevy 3 speed transmission with a quickchange unit on the back, pretty cool. I put the link in here and added pictures for the future.

Back in the day would have been a sneaky way to fudge the rules where a quick change wasn't permissible, at least less obvious.

Cool, but wouldn't exactly be quick to change!

As I recall reading way back, it was intended to lower unsprung weight. And the same 10 spline qc gears as used in the Winters or Frankland qc rears fit, so there's a wide range of ratios available. Also I seem to remember that they recommended the drive shaft have a slip joint in it that had enough travel to allow the cover to be removed without dropping the driveshaft.

Thanks Tim. It’s very busy here and I don’t always have something to add but I thought this was pretty damn neat.

  13. Several companies made them I have an add (VTH? was another company that built them) I will have to find it; they were built for oval track racing classes that did not allow quick change rears.

The also were an advantage in less unsprung weight.

Would love to toy with one, no need to alter the rear crossmember or spring for clearance only drive shaft alteration as I see it....less impressive rear view but precisely as intended to the competition.

Yes, they were a thing. We made a variation of our own. The one shown uses two sets of QC gears so that the driveshaft still turns the counterclockwise (from the driver's seat).
Ours just used one set and we flipped the rear axle.
By using magnesium castings, aluminum axle tubes, gun drilled axles etc. we cut 125 lbs of unsprung weight. Admittedly, the old QC was not on the Jenny Craig diet.
The car was fast, and totally awesome in thee handling department, but changing the gears was a headache.
One season and back to a Quickchange. about a 15 lb. gain in unsprung weight.

I still have the pieces if anyone is interested.
