One of our friends just bought his first car in high school. It was a 1951 Pontiac two door sedan. He wanted to keep the idea of a two door sedan, as all of us that had hot rods or cruisers, drove two door sedans. It was stock and in fairly good condition. After all, it was 1961 and only 10 years old in a covered garage most of its life. He was not much in the automotive mechanical repair and diagnosis way, but his admiration for those that had the skills or at least were willing to experiment was much appreciated.

He asked us what he should do to make it special. My first thought was a set of screw in Moon Discs for some authenticity. He already turned his white walls to the inside, so the Moon Discs would be on blackwalls. Then after that suggestion, he ran out of money. So, it was just little things like spun plastic knobs and other little things from the local chrome and accessories shop. Also, working on small class projects in high school classes, but spending as much as the budget would allow.

The best thing he did was to use his car in our high school metal and auto shops as a means of getting some work done for free. We made his automatic column shifter into a floor mounted shift lever with options for any lever or shape of lever screwed into the base shifter. He selected a tall one so people could see the ball knob from the outside of his car. It looked like an old time hot rod cruising around.

Was he happy that his old Pontiac was not the fastest car in our group? Did he care that when he did stomp on the gas pedal that those in his car, plus the other old 6 cylinder Chevy in the next lane were all happy and laughing out loud? It was freedom to go anywhere possible. But to have a cool floor shifter sticking out of the floorboard and up in the air, made it just that much more fun.

Today, that old 1951 Pontiac would be lowered in Cal Rake stance and have a big motor rumbling at the start up. Turn on the A/C and cruise all over So Cal like we used to do as teenagers, but in cool comfort. Moon Discs? Perhaps, but more than likely, different wheels, possibly American Racing Equipment Torq-Thrust 5 spokes to keep it an authentic 1960 high school hot rod. It was a fun car to ride around in as teenagers and today, the feeling would still be the same, with the upgrades in technology.

I recently put truck heads on my long bell housing 331 hemi. Engine is bored 1/8" to 354. Big ports in these heads allowed me to make 2" fender dump headers I always wanted for my gasser cartoon car. Equivalent of a 20" glass pack muffler is built into the colletors.

 

I've seen a bunch of welded up cast iron manifolds in this thread, what is the best way to weld the cast? Braze, nickel rod arc weld, I have heard flux core wire feed works any truth to that? I'm in the beginning stages of building an old school two carb intake out of a stock cast iron flathead manifold. Plan is to weld two sets of pipe to the manifold that go up to some steel plates to mount the carbs, just like the J.C. Whitney kits. So I will be welding steel pipe to the cast manifold, thinking brazing would be best but would like some input from those that have done it.

I have built a could of BlueFlame split manifolds by brazing them and had good results.

I have welded cast iron before and never had any trouble, but it can be a crap shoot.

brazed the steel pipe for carb risers to cast iron intake. 7018 stick welded the second v-8 exhaust dump to the cast iron manifold. Homemade progressive linkage.

I brazed two pipe stubs on this 354 manifold to install a thermostat housing for my early hemi.

 

What is most important in welding cast iron is preheat and letting it cool,slowly and evenly! I have brazed and stick welded with nickel rod successfully, on various things.

You might try Tig Brazing the components to get a nicer finish . Try it on a couple of old cast iron parts and see how you like it. I Tig brazed some pads to an engine block where I wanted to be able to add some studs to hold some parts behind the headers. Easy to do and lots of control of the heat and rod.

 

Speaking of exhaust. Here is part of what is inside the vacuum operated mufflers I have had the joy of fabricating over the last few years.
