Hot Rods The car I've been looking for my entire life! Well, 20+ years anyway. 1939 Deluxe Coupe

  1. It's the stock mount with a different coil. When it goes in the car I will use the coil, dizzy and wires that are on the old engine.

  2. Yes, the oil filter was made to work like the original, just bleed a little oil off and dump back into the pan. I have modified it by removing all restrictions and adding bigger lines to flow more oil so now it is the 3/4 flow type filter.

  8. I haven't kept up with this thread but just so you know the new engine is in the car and running good. There is also a fresh Paul Jennings 39 box behind it and it shifts very smooth. 20210915_100242.jpg 20210915_100245.jpg 20210915_112844.jpg 20210915_112848.jpg 20210915_150937.jpg 20210915_173304.jpg 20210916_135754.jpg

  9. This all happened a while ago and I already have better than 250 miles on the engine. Yesterday we decided to run it a bit harder, performs very well. Disregard the complaints from the old 39 box, I assure you that it shifts very nice when treated with respect. ;)

  10. I don't want to sidetrack Tim's excellent thread, but he may just be the guy too answer this...
I've never had a flathead so I am not too familiar with them, but... I've always been impressed with how quickly they start: sounds like about a 1/4 turn and they're running. What makes them fire up so easily? It can't be a 'super tune, because I'm so good with finessing these things' (no offense to those of you that think that) because even my buddies in high school had flatties that fired up like that, and we weren't engine wizards by any means! Do they have a hotter ignition system than other engines of the era, or ???
    Thanks!

  12. I think it all comes down to a good tune and set up. This car fires so quickly hot or cold but my Merc is a hard hot start. May be the 6v vs. 12v but I hate to say it because I have several 6v cars that do just fine. I don't think that going 12v is an "upgrade", just a change.

6 volt guys, rock on! :D

They usually have low compression. My 1978 454 fires right up, I barely hear the starter. It's 9:1 compression. One thing all this pollution stuff taught us was you don't need a lot of compression to make a strong and fast street engine. It took me a few years to get used to putting 87 octane in this 454 but it runs so much stronger with the low octane. My initial is 22 and the mechanical 14 all in by 2500, no vacuum advance..

  17. Nice road trip in the 39 today. 300 mile round trip to Onyx to celebrate the "Cam Father's" 101st birthday. Good to see him again, sharp as a tack as always. The old Flathead in the 39 performed flawlessly over 6000' and over 70 mph coming home on highway 99. Great day for sure! :)

  24. Not yet, but after this trip it may happen soon. It's a great car to drive on a long trip but revs a bit high over 65. I love driving it though.
