It was my intention to be more regular with my updates...but a 2 year old changes things a bit. I will make a more concerted effort.

 

Thanks! Hopefully with some other smaller projects out of the way now...I'll have faster, more regular updates.

Update on the V8s!

So not a large amount of progress since last time, but I have made some gains!

Finally got both frames (mine and Ewan’s) finished up and welded! That was a big, full day. Everything is square, level and welded up good with all the gussets and boxing plates.

I went back after I got it home and made up some cover/finish plates to cap and clean things up with an art deco flurish..









I also stitched Ewan’s cross member back together and got it welded in at the same time as all the rear drop stuff. I did his Motor mounts at this time as well.









I went back and stitched these up with the big welder later.

We also got his Wheels painted and some other period goodies acquired for both cars, including his fuel tank….the oil tank from an F6F-3 Hellcat.





















Finally found a dash for mine…’28 Packard 8.



Also experimented with painting my brake drums red. Saw it done on a 1929-'30 Packard and really liked it. Think it looks sharp with the Washington blue wheels. Thoughts?

That wheel and hub drum paint combo looks great.

 

I wasn't sure how well it would go with Washington Blue, but I think it really pops well with it.

The Packard I saw it on was a black 1929-'30 Super 8 speedster. All the details were red, red drums, black wires. It really popped too.....always wanted a car to try it on.

Yup! Slowly, but surely making progress. I can tell you though I'm sick of welding and grinding! These two cars are WAY more finished then the T ever was...so I have to scrutinize every weld, dimple, pit, holes filled...everything.

Family is great. Charlotte is still a pistol and getting smarter, funnier and feistier by the day.

 

Plenty more coming! Hopefully these will be assembled for test firing this summer.

 

What paint did you use on the drums? Looks good!

 

Its just Plasti-coat Engine Enamel. Its good for up to 500°F, so it should be Okay and I can buy it at my local hardware store. I love it, used that stuff for years and love it.

 

Red drums looks very good actually (so does the whole car).

I like that cast license plate bracket, what is from ?

 

I wish I knew! its Teens era....probably roadster or touring fender mount, but nothing else can I find. Gonna sit center mount as a tag/running light. Two '37 Ford lights will be Stop/Tail/Turn.

 

Hi Mr Model T.If you have`nt messed with that oil tank for the Grumman,you migh contact people who restore those WW2 AC.It just might be worth much more that your whole project and then some.
More history value too.Project progress looking great too.

Update: Outside in the Sun!

So in the last update i mentioned that I finally had my chassis sitting on all fours for the firs time...but like a moron, i forgot to get any decent photos. To make up for this...I decided to roll it out side and do so and drop the engine back in at the same time (since i needed it outside anyway to make room to shuffle stuff around).







...and of course I couldn't just leave it there, so I had to mock the body back up...





Charlotte 100% approves. She posed with it on her own.



Also got Ewan's engine mounted in his chassis and the front axle temporarily installed, but its not much to look at until I can get the tires mounted and get it on the ground too.



Hopefully Wheels, tires and the body in the next week or so.

Update - Also made progress on Ewan's T.

Since the motor is in and we are in full mockup stage and ready to test fire the engines soon, I decided it was time to get the body on the '27 V8 project. At the same time, I needed to get the new tires mounted so we could get it on the ground. Before i could do that, I needed to the striping done first. I mixed up some yellow and white One-Shot to get as close to Tacoma Cream as I could and went to work with my Beugler Striping tool. I have a little touch up to do, but they turned out pretty nice.





Then we took them in the be mounted..





Then it was time to muscle the body in place...





The Stance is perfect!



Charlotte approves...

good idea, man!

 

To pinstripe the wheels did you use a turntable or rotisserie or something to turn the wheels while you held the pinstripe tool?

 

Yes! I actually chucked one of my '32-'34 Spindles in my big floor vise. Added a front hub/drum, the bearings and a lug nut to hold the wheel tight. That way it was at the perfect level and i could spin it easily by hand. worked great!

Its still a hard shape to paint on, being round and convex....makes it hard to make sure the lines line up perfectly and stay centered.
