I have a 59 block in my 40 ford. Has 2000 miles on it. Running one Holley 2 barrel of a 3 deuce intake. Iffy heads. Electronic crab dissy retarded as far as it will go. Has been running great since the car was built. Engine temp was a constant 175°. Suddenly it developed running at 190-200 and starts to ping. Has anyone experienced the same symptoms? What was your solution?
Sounds like it's running too lean, fuel supply, pump, carb jet blocked. manifold/carb base air leak???
Thanks for your input. Running Elec. Pump. Elec. Vac. Pump for power breaks. Will check carb and fresh fuel.
Hopefully nothing even close to this. Cracked block between valve seat and cylinder, led to a world of carnage. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/cured-my-flatheads-occasional-overheating.1265297/
Lean fuel mixture would do that. If that checks out then check your timing. Retarded ignition results in heat. I think those are the two most likely culprits. Good luck
Electronic distributor should not change. Has been running fine and is retarded as far as it goes. I believe more advance = more heat.
Problem solved. I went to check the plugs to see if there was any sign of coolant getting into a cylinder. Aha! #8 plug wire was not connected at the plug. No Ping Temp at 175
