  1. What do you plan for brand and grade of oil when you get it back together, to avoid flat cam lobes?

10w30 from walmart....the valve springs are small, the cam and lifters are well broken in, and despite the rumors, there's still zddp in modern oil, and it gets used up only as needed, no matter how much is in the oil.

That’s it Jim. You could build it like the Nova and call it the back up

    Hmmm
Wonder if a T-10 out of an AMX will bolt up to that!

No, it's not an easy transmission to replace...and I like the three on the tree, too

heh...that's my friend Tom's site. I have his number, I text him directly when I have a question, and he replies to my fb posts about the car.

  11. Weren't these early Rambler OHV 6s an engine designed as a sort of "conversion" based on the older Rambler flathead six short block? What a wonderfully, oddly American Motors approach to engineering a new series of engines!

Intake manifold? We don't need no Intake manifold!

It's half way to the Ford/Chevy integral manifold heads, but not quite as hard to modify.

here's a picture that shows the intake manifold pretty clearly. Notice that lots of head bolts go through it!

Is that a “plate” on top…i/e what the carburetor bolts onto? Or all one piece?

Edit: I zoomed in, I can see clearly now;)

Ok... Yes, a small supercharger may bolt on in place on intake.

A peek under the intake plate. Pretty high tech, eh? or not.

  21. Of course, there's also the aluminum block version of this 196 engine, new for 1961.....

I understand they didn't often survive

  23. I know it’s O/T, but the intake manifold plate set up is the same idea as a B model Cummins. It’s intriguing how Nash pioneered this concept.

It amazes me that they could get even fuel distribution with that wide open box! Atleast with a Cummins, all you have to worry about is airflow.

The exhaust manifold looks like they stole one from a 287/327 V8.

kind of similar, but not....the holes on mine are in a line, they aren't on the V8.

  28. Boy, I would be real tempted to mill that head some to raise the compression a little. But that's just how my mind works!

Little bit of bowl clean up work under the valves ? Touch the port areas to clean up casting edges too?

The oil filter was easy to get to and kept the left side of the engine from rusting and generator lubed.
