I’m rebuilding a stock Chevy single point Delco for my 283 and while researching tips on here, I ran across this pic from @GMCBubba showing one he was doing (for a flathead.) My question is: what is the red grease he used in this pic, packed beneath the points plate? As he’s been retired for some time, figured he wasn’t available. But I’ll try a PM. Thanks!
Do you mean what kind of grease is it? or what is it there for? It's used to lube the upper bushing, there's a plastic piece above it that retains it in place. Generally if you take apart a 50 years old distributor, the grease will be a bit dry...good idea to replace it
I think that's a high temp grease like a disk brake wheel bearing would use. I'm not sure what brand is red, maybe Lucas?
Thanks! Sorry if I wasn’t clear. What kind of grease. Anything special? Yep, old stuff was solidified.
Not sure about the red for a grease grade, but I figured it would spin wheel bearing fast and used what I had for GM wheel bearing grease when I've done mine.
I believe that is Delco Remy Gear and Shaft Lubricant #1960954. Long obsolete but can be found on eBay and at flea markets. Bought me a NOS jar at Carlisle a few years ago.
I've still cot a tube of Delco Remy distributor cam lube for points. I bought it when I was in tech school in 1970. My instructor told us that a tube would last a guy a life time. Probably 85% of the tube is left.
Good to know since I am going to be freshening up the one in my 283. I happen to have something similar on the shelf!
$45 a jar...well if that distributer runs smoother as a result I can only imagine it's gotta be worth every penny.
