    Hello,

It was now 1964 and for the last several years, the drag racing scene was changing over to more modifications allowed for the street legal classes. The muffler and exhaust pipes were still required, but now parachutes and super wide racing slick tires… for a street legal class? The Anglia in the photo was from Westminster, CA and was one of the first smaller lighter weight cars used for the street legal Gas Coupe and Sedan classes.

Running 7 inch Bruce Slicks on the streets was not the safest thing to do back then, but when all out street racing is on the line, everything counts. We just had to remember the mist and midnight curse of early dew on the street surfaces. But, the 7 inch slicks fit under our stock wheel openings and they looked like normal street tires. So, for a “street legal” coupe or sedan to be running 10 inch wide racing slicks… well they obviously don’t stay inside of the stock wheel well openings.

By this time period, the modifications were starting to become commonplace as the rules were changed. So, more modifications were allowed and the late 50s to early 1960 Gas Coupes/Sedans were not the same street legal cars as before. Times were definitely changing and the Gas Coupe/Sedan Class wandered into the full race modified car builds and eventually, disappeared in drag racing. As the years rolled on to the next episodes of drag racing, the fuel dragsters started taking over, alongside of the funny cars. Too bad for the Gas Coupe and Sedan, street legal racing excitement…

My old T Coupe in Auckland NZ, when owned by the guy who built it. I loved the "cartoon" aspects of the car.

The car was in storage for years, and our fender rules changed, so I was unable to make it legal - turned out our fender exemptions didnt include tyres sticking out past the guards, so as part of the rebuilt to make it street legal again, the guards had to go.
