I think they are still working at getting some of the rigs out of the pits and picking up equipment off the salt plus what floated away from various pits.

This was posted on FB a couple of hours ago, stuff found floating or sitting in the pits or beyond. Found stuff at bonneville.jpg

The good part of the salt flats is that it is flat and level. The bad part is that it is flat and level and water doesn't run off like it would in most places.

Well, this is the sort of event that made it what is, so it has to be accepted philosophically.

It’s why when you leave for the night only your canopy frame and trailer are left out. Everything is inside, folding chairs and tables too….just not organized and locked/tied down. I crank the top vents down to 1/2” anyway for wind.

It rained all night Friday. Ugly. I saw the writing on the wall and bailed out early. Did have fun on Friday looking at everything. Sorry, my camera lense was filthy. I clicked the live webcam feed from Bonneville almost every day in July, just to see where I was going. Flew home on Monday. I just checked the feed right before posting this, and you can see the total reflection of the mountains in the water still today. I hate not getting to see racing, but I really hate it for the teams that are dealing with the salt water damage now, not to mention what their expenses are. Have all the teams been able to get their stuff yet?

Sorry for the lack of racing but the lake has been shrinking because of a lack of water and the flooding does help the lake in the short term

Glad to see you got the left front to hold air. This photo shows you in good company [George Roseland and the South Omaha Boys [S.O.B.s] Stude coupe] Maybe it's a good thing my coupe is on the inured list. I hate driving all that way to find water in the lake.[IMG]

What a complete S*%# Show. 8" of water where you entered onto the salt for almost 3 miles the pits were under around 3" when we got out there Sunday afternoon to retrieve the car and all our gear. Car was sitting in the water. We had gotten it all ready Fri aft to take to Tech first thing Sat morn. The torrential rain on Sat. night was the killer!
Our camp at the bend became a complete Mud Bog. Got one truck out Sat aft. the other 3 Sunday aft. and the camper finally Mon. aft. Guys next to us had the Wendover wrecker service come out with their Snowcat and pull their truck and camper out. Cost $1000, $500 ea. They pulled out several others as well.

Oh well, there's Always Next Year! Exit Sign.jpg Forget A'bout it.jpg Our Pit.jpg Got Salt Waterskiing.jpeg Driving out from the Pit.jpg Loading in the pits.jpg Camp Sat. Morn.jpg Crew at Camp.jpg Camp Life.jpg Sunrise wed Morn..jpg Meter.jpg

Yep, very discouraging to anyone involved. I was there last year and everything was perfect. Could not go this year but had plans to try and figure it out. Didn't happen.
I will still go back again though. Definitely a gamble. Feel bad for all the racers who had big plans and spent much more money and time on this than the rest of us spectators.

This was the salt on Saturday, Aug. 13th - originally the last scheduled day of Speedweek.

This was a few hours later, while yet another storm raged. Might look different tomorrow.

Yup. It's a lake once again on Sunday morning, the 14th. All 3 of these photos are within a 24 hour cycle.

D class vintage altered with 671 front mount SBC 292 D/CG ALTERED

    Hello,

My brother and I have always wanted to run something at Bonneville Salt Flats or at El Mirage. Who in their right mind would not want to feel the full throttle effect of your build in the endless horizon? Despite our efforts, the closest we got was to race on the El Mirage dry lake bed on our 250 cc Greeves Motorcycles... (the same races as Don Nowell did back in those early 60s. )

We got the general idea with the lay down stance, hanging on for dear life, and the throttle on full twist, to go as fast as we could. The dry lake was endless, or it seemed and the contrast to the flat "mirage" that gave us the feeling of... "just keep going on forever..." So, kudos to those that enter Bonneville or at El Mirage for those exciting runs.

In looking at the weather satellite map and the direction the storm front was heading, Bonneville Salt flats was right in its path. It is a little disheartening that such an annual event was dislodged by rain. Being flat for miles, no angular slopes for drainage, on the wide area, so flooding was a large event this year.

When I was in a funky drawing mood, I had already drawn a customized Ford panel truck, but added extras for the custom shows. Then the 36 Ford posts got me thinking that my brother would have liked to go as fast as possible using our first 292 SBC blower spec motor with the 671 kit. But, to keep the streamlining effect in play as much as possible, we would have used a front Potvin blower kit for inclusion within the body, hood and removable panels.

The 36 5 window Ford looked funny being chopped at various levels. So, a 36 Ford 3 window somehow survived the various chopped drawings to keep the proportions in place. No one wants a car that looks like Shaquille O’Neal and his friends had a party sitting on top of the 36 Coupe.

    Jnaki

So, if it were in the floods of 2022, the Ford panel truck would be floating, while the 36 Ford coupe would be the plow to move the water sideways… HA!
    upload_2022-8-15_3-42-49.png Joe Itow Willys Coupe
As far as a Bonneville entry in those early days, “what if “Joe Itow and his magic were to be applied to a chopped 1940 Willys Coupe? It would come from the early drag days to the Bonneville race days using a 1939 Willys Pickup Truck in the 50s style scallop trend. But, as lowered as each vehicle is concerned, 2022 may have presented some water problems.
    upload_2022-8-15_3-43-52.png

Hope everyone comes back next year for the annual record breaking event. Weather permitting… YRMV
