Technical Front axle / suspension ID

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ClutchDumpinDan, Jul 28, 2022.

  1. Saw an ad for an “old car front suspension”. Saw a wishbone, front mounted transverse spring and wide five wheels in the fuzzy picture of it in the weeds. So I assumed it was ‘37-‘38 Ford.

Upon seeing it in person, I have no idea what it is! A lot smaller scale than early Ford stuff. The wishbone looks even lighter duty than a Model A. I’m not familiar with anyone other than Ford and VW running a wide five bolt pattern?

Any ideas what this came out of?

  2. That was one of my first thoughts but haven’t seen anything close to it with a google image search? Hard to find one that doesn’t have a straight axle and blown hemi though :D

I also didn’t know they used wide five on Anglias.

  7. Well isn’t that neat. Learn something new everyday. Looks like a nice front axle for a FED.

    Thanks everyone!

  8. The axle and spindles are good FED material.

  9. I actually ran across an Anglia in a scrapyard in Georgia about 30 years ago, body rusted to pieces but frame intact. The front suspension looked just like what you have here, a scaled down version of a '37-'38 US Ford front end.

I had to hunt around a while to find one. They seem to drop on everybody else's foot. Mike

Here's a question: anyone know if US Ford spindles fit onto these axles? In particular, 32-34? My mind won't let go of a crazy idea. I'm sure someone can answer...

No, king pin diameters and yoke spacing are different.
    BTW, what is your idea?

A small almost cycle car type of thing using a BMC A-series 4 cylinder, like Spridgets use. Just a nightmare...

SWMBO has asked me to finish the Whatever project before I start another...

    I don't know what she's talking about!

Being from W.MA (me too originally), just 1 question: got the axle? You're close enough for me to pick up something like that... I'm in Saratoga county.
