Got word that Henry "Butch" Hurlhey passed earlier this week. For those who don't know, Butch was a bodyman for many years working with Rod Powell in Salinas. Butch was responsible for some incredible customs including Midnight Sensation, the Harold Olsen Chevy, Curley Tremayne Merc, and even wild show cars like the Mork & Mindy car and PacMan car. Butch was an incredible talent and super nice guy and I was proud to be able to call him a friend. He was also a great mentor to many younger guys including the Salinas Boys and helped to put the "Salinas" look on the map. We've lost another legend, RIP my friend.
It's so sad that we are loosing so many talented people that have made this car culture what it is today.
Nice article here on Butch, Rod and Curly's Merc. https://www.customcarchronicle.com/icons-of-the-80s/curley-tremayne-50-merc-restoration/
Great tribute. The Tremayne Merc (as well as it's detailed how to chop tutorial) really made an impact to the Custom revival scene (and me personally) back in the late 70's. Still love that car.
