George ran the carnut website, I know many on here are familiar with the site. I am told he passed away yesterday. RIP George.
Dang. Had the pleasure of talking to him a few times. There are literally car guys around the globe who love and enjoy his website. Long may it ride! RIP, George!
Condolences to the Mcdowell family and friends on the passing of George... Rest in Peace Hotrodder... Thanks @Sancho for sharing this news of George's passing. Regards, Stogy George, his first Car & Hotrod Quoted "In January of 1967 Jonny Pate with his 1931 Model A Ford coupe w/265 chevy V8, Keith Meikle with his 1932 Ford 5 window coupe w/260 mustang V8, and I entered our cars in the local car show, promoted by Darryl Starbird, where my coupe took second place in radical rod. Not real sure, but I think the Titus brothers just took pity on me. One of Starbird's cars took first of course." That's sad news. I talked to George via e-mail many times. He was a tremendous help to me in my picture searching for various things over the years. His site is one of the originals from lots of sites that are now long gone. I hope it can stay running. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Vaya con Dios, Mr. McDowell. E
George will be missed. He was good to me. Here is a photo I took of him working a car show many years ago. Gods speed old friend. John
Before the HAMB existed, allowing me to live out my vicarious dreams (at least, before I knew of the HAMB)...there was Carnut. 20 years ago I was a high school student (yep, I'm a youngun yet) and my lunch hours in the school libary were devoted to that site. If dig through my old junk, I can probably still find some of the blurry photos I'd print off and stuff in a binder before heading back to class. Sort of like how an earlier generation would sneak Rod n' Custom little pages into class. I doodled hot rods in the margins of all my work, and Carnut was there to stoke the flame. I have visited only occasionally in recent years, sometimes just to marvel that the site still exists exactly as I remember it. I am sad to hear that George's chapter has come to a close. Rest in peace, George.
That's a horrible loss to our hobby. There is not another guy like George or his site. He helped so many car people including myself in so many ways and was a real pleasure to know.
Just learned of George's death. Never met him in person, just email, but a very nice guy. As I recall, carnut.com was running on a server in his home, he wrote the custom code himself, and as of this writing, is still working. I see that archive.org has archived his site, so should be available to us for a long time, thank goodness. https://web.archive.org/web/20220227091315/http://www.carnut.com/
