Yeah, its there for a reason, the looks are secondary. I know it is not traditional but clear coat has a squeak all it's own when rubbed up against another panel. Sort of like plastic sheets.

Where we pay a fortune in sales taxes and then the added state liquor taxes.
A few years ago when I was down in Chula Vista for my aunt's funeral the liquor store up the street from the motel had crown for 19.95 a fifth out the door. That was with California taxes. We paid over 30 bucks for the same fifth.

Back to fender welting, I rather prefer body color for the welting or a close contrasting color that might also be the pinstripe color. Back around 1982 I bought a roll of chrome welting for the 48 but it started looking like hell sitting on the shelf in the garage. It's just the chrome looking vinyl stuff though.

my best friend is an upholsterer and takes whatever size rope you need and wraps vinyl around it and stiches it up. Any color, any size, whatever. Works like a charm. Can come real close to matching your paint

  15. No matter what color of welting you chose painting the sides of the Grill Bars is a MUST DO with just the leading edge of Chrome showing. It's a detail thing dude. You're all about detail, right? Don't miss that boat.

man the blackwall tires really kill the looks of that car....

  18. yeah it really changed the look, I think narrow white walls would be the better choice over the wide whites for the early 60s look with the spider caps

Different strokes for different folks... I really think it ruins the looks of it.... of course I can’t stand the current trend of black wheels no hubcaps and black tires either... yuk

Yep, me to. Less is more. To me using white or chrome welting doesn't let the body flow. It breaks up the panels too much.

The problem is how the welt looks on the front fenders. Contrasting fender welt looks great on rear fenders, but on the front, the fender welt only runs from the bottom of the cowl to the hood...and stops dead...not continuing across the rest of the fender. Always looked odd to me, and for that reason, I'd use black...that issue won't show up as much;)

The question is, do you want to draw attention to it or have it just go away?

If you are swaying towards black. Use a flat black in color. Have an upholsterer sew it up for you. I vote white.

  28. I used a foam tape on my rear fenders because I didn’t want welting showing, now I kind of want to put white….

oh and Billy put white if you are doing white panel pinstripes or else chrome.

Black on my 35 Chevy and close to body colour for my 46 Olds, it's actually a lot lighter than it appears.

    Let me get this straight......
You want a consensus, on the HAMB, for the color of your welting????
BwaaHaaHaa!!!! We can't agree on what day of the week it is, what the hell makes you think we can be depended on to form a consensus, or even a logical opinion for you????
A former boss once told me that a camel is a horse designed by committee, so you got that working against you.....
You claim to be building it for your wife.... What does she like? Or are you deliberately sliding in little details that she may not like, so very soon after completion she'll turn up her nose and walk away, leaving you to enjoy it to your heart's content?
Buck up! Be a man! You don't have a hair on your ass if you don't TELL US what color welting you're going to use (with Mrs. Bandit Billy's approval, of course)! (no, I'm not an ass-hair aficionado, I just appreciate a good cliche` now and then).
Move along folks..... nothing to see here.
By the way... the next few days are gonna be quite warm. so keep hydrated while you're buffing!!
