Technical Brake Switch

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Scooterville, Jul 19, 2022.

  1. Anyone know where I can find this brake switch? It’s on my 56 Merc but I don’t think it’s original to the car.
The 2 terminals are corroded. And there’s a rod that protrudes out when you remove it from the proportional valve. Thanks.

Looks like it should be this part.
68-79 F100 / Galaxie / Fairlane brake pressure shuttle switch.
(Search that, this one popped up on eBay for $34)

just use the A/C mechanical switch that GM used for so many years. It was also used on Cushman motor scooters

This is not a stop light switch. It is a warning light switch in case there is a pressure difference in the system usually caused by a leak.

Keep looking...you'll find the brake light switch, eventually. Hint: it will be under the dash, near the top of the brake pedal, possibly?

according to rock auto your car was born with a pressure switch for the brakes, But I bet when your car got modified that was eliminated and a pedal operated switch installed, as squirrel said look under the dash

  8. ok I thought so but wasn’t sure. I just got the car and the brake lights don’t work. There are 2 wires laying loose near the booster. I touched them together and the brake lights come on. I bet the brake switch IS under the dash now. If so I’ll have to fish those wires back through under the dash. I did order a brake switch but may not need it now if there’s one under there. Oh well I’ll have a spare :) Thanks guys!!

A little research shows it originally used a hydraulic switch, that attached originally to the MC, that is no longer there.

The one added under the dash on the pedal either has an arm or a button. I’m guessing the car may never had one. Your 2 wires went to the stock pressure switch Squirrel showed. Many change to a pedal arm switch because of corrosion which your prop valve indicates your vehicle has. A pressure switch can be added to your system in a tee fitting if you want to use the wires where they are. Making a bracket and working under a dash is no longer fun for many of us.
