OK I might as well start this step-by-step adventure with the "story board". We start with this profile. IMG_1148.jpg

That profile becomes this profile, and I send it home with Dan. IMG_1223 (1).jpg

This gives you a pretty good idea about where this is going. Dan blew up the little profile into one that would fit on the two boards. IMG_1222.jpg

The back side edges are sharp, the top side edges are smooth and rounded, a guide coat lets you know where you're IMG_1164.jpg IMG_1165.jpg at.

Here's that same spot shaped and finished, in primer, with a guide coat in preparation for a final sanding for paint.
Although I've never worked with wood like this before, I'm enjoying the creative challenge. I'm glad I dont have to be concerned about corrosion protection. IMG_1175 (1).jpg

I need to cut the "spotlight" off of the "fender" IMG_1179.jpg and deal with it separately.

IMG_1182.jpg The "spotlight" needs some personal attention.

Hey guys I need some help. When I retired from my 40+ years in the auto-body industry I was a PPG shop. Very expensive stuff, but to guarantee my work I needed a bullet proof product that would keep me out of trouble.
I brought some of it with me when I moved to Texas and used it on these builds. Now that I'm doing this type of thing I wonder if there are good inexpensive products out there that you can recommend. What do you say?

Minwax stain products, Minwax Helmsman spar urethane clear for topcoat, both available in quart cans. Available at your local hardware store , or the big box stores, Lowes, Home depot etc. Also Rust-oleum an oil based enamel paint has a wide variety of colors to choose from.

I appreciate your reply, however I should have mentioned that I am looking for something that will have a hardener as part of the product. Thanks again.

I've got to make things like this (the details) as realistic as possible. I'm still lookin for that helpful suggestion, I know it's out there. IMG_1228.jpg

Damn, it's hot in Texas. I may have to do something drastically radical to make this work. A little more detail on that spotlight. IMG_1229.jpg

If you want a hardener to use , you know you can use One shot lettering enamel with a hardener agent mixed in . Pinstripers use One Shot enamel. download.jpg

I did not know that, thanks.
I think the remedy for my problem is in a companies "value line" product. I need to look into PPG's Omni line. I can use the same reducer (which I have plenty of). I guess I need to call/visit my local PPG store. I would rather just order online, we'll see.

It looks good Jerry, but what are you building? Is it a display board for car shows? I'm especially puzzled by the picture of the real car with the wood dowel coming out of the windshield pillar with that "c" shaped thing below it.

C shaped thing is a roll of masking tape to keep door slightly open while he is working on his project.

It's gonna be a replica of the car that will have all the details on what it is on it. If the somebody doesn't know who Jesse Lopez is...I'll try to help them.
I've got wooden dowells in the spot light holes to help locate where the A pillar (interior) trim is supposed to be.

I need to put just "a whisper" of that rear fender, because if I had a full size one the sign painter woul'nt be able to say all the things that need to be said. IMG_1197 (2).jpg /ATTACH] IMG_1198.jpg IMG_1199 (1).jpg IMG_1200.jpg

Hey Jer, nice new project. Hate to read about the knee and eye. Sorry that the time has come to find the cars new homes. Even though that was always the plan, it is wild that the time has come so fast. They are both great cars, but I am very partial to Jr.’s car. Good luck with everything!
