I can't/won't show the car, but I did want to show what a nationally known funny car was being hauled on in the mid 60's. It seems sort of safe to me. Just a toolbox and a trailer. image34 (4).jpg

    Hello,

In 1958-59, during the humble heydays of drag racing in So Cal, a lot of people towed their race cars to the dragstrip. But, for those that are creative with a lightweight race car, perhaps this is a good method of drag race car transportation. No worries about cross winds, blown out trailer tires, bent tow bars, inconsistent tail lights, or out of control braking, etc. Just drop the tail gate, roll it into the bed, lift it up, shut the tailgate and off to the drags.

A lot of drag racing motorcycles did just that scenario, but a lightweight FED? That is some drag racing creativity and ingenuity in action. Never challenge a hot rod/drag race creativity and ingenuity from back in those great, old So Cal days.

Some young kid in a red Pendleton going eye to eye with the Tapia Bros FED race car. What, me worry? Taking a well deserved snack break and just lounging around...

We were there back then... Thanks, James...

Bonneville racer Marlo Treit built that car for his buddy Whitey.

Think of how fast that race car must have seemed after trucking it to the track?

I love it when the tow vehicle is a street version of the race car.

Borrowed a buddy's trailer for a mid-week test & tune. Sometimes the minibikes need a ride too.

Johnny, depending, on which trailer you use, you have to adjust your statement at the track. Like, "it ran such and such off the trailer", or "it dropped out of the trailer with such and such ET and MPH. See you at Toutle !

Around here in the mid to late 60's many Dragsters were carried in trailers like this one. The box, was framed out of angle iron or square tube, sheeted with plywood, and skinned with white painted aluminum. The metal was cut to size, allowing for the shrinkage with a roll former, at one of the many, vacation trailer/camper factories locally.
this one came along with the deal, when we bought a Jr. Fueler in the mid-80's. I worked a place called Nomad Campers, in '67. IMG_9503.JPG

Also, check out the tires. The trip from OCIR or Irwindale back to Garden Grove must have been a tad bit nerve wracking.

Looking forward to Toutle and to seeing you there! Just came in from the shop, been ignoring the Willys working on another project, figured I better give the old girl some much-needed maintenance, the 396 is getting a little tired. Hopefully the rumor of a special visitor at Toutle is correct, if so looking forward to seeing Mr. Ganahl and the Iacono car. No trailer in the photo but there is one mentioned!
