I know it's not for everyone, but.....

    I kinda dig it.

I can see a date of 1962, but was it short lived?
I am using T buckets because it is easy to see.

Wasn't that method of upholstery during the time period these cars were originally designed and built. Probably on higher end cars than the Ford T series.
I assume the cars built later in the 50s and 60s were a throw back to the old method.
    So early 1900s till now?

I remember that style becoming popular on T buckets mostly in the early 60's. Seems like tuck 'n roll
style with contrasting colors replaced it for most hot rods and street cars. Nothing cooler than the rear
deck shelf showing tuck and roll...pretty funny now.

  5. The early 60s (maybe late 50s). Kind of gave way to narrow pleats in the mid '60s then made a comeback in the early '70s.

Diamond tuft was often factory upholstery on early cars. Before cars were a thing, it was used on horse drawn carriages and furniture.

So, the traditional hot rod boards of the 50's were saying "Just like the 00's Bro"........ Only the old timers will get that.

But, specifically for hot rods and customs. Not so much buggies etc.
I am thinking 1958-1965ish, then a resurgence in the early 70's.
    Am I close?

That looks more like a rolling Madonna Inn (San Luis Obispo, Ca.) if you get my drift. ;)

I just paged thru the custom car yearbook number 1. printed in 1963. I saw about a half dozen cars with button tufted interiors including Farhners Eclipse that I believe was built in 1960 and Starbirds Forcasta that was built in 62 ish. and I bet there were a hundred other cars pictured that had rolled and pleated interiors. Questions like this are usually best answered by paging thru vintage magazines , peoples memories including my own are not very accurate...

In 1978 I bought 57 hardtop. Black tufted seats. It was in a barn shed for a few years where we hung tobacco as teenagers. I talked to the owner/builder and bought it. He built the car right after he graduated in 1967.

That’s kinda what I have been doing . The problem is that it seems to have bled over a few years.

Not like current days, things tended to linger based on location. We have the internet now, which speeds things up, fad wise.

I grew up Here in Oklahoma and things used to be at least 10 years behind , say California.

    Hello,

Of the three Chevy sedans that got new upholstery, two got full white tuck and roll from south of the border.
    upload_2022-6-27_4-35-13.png
For the best viewing of any of the Chevy sedans that had the all white tuck and roll upholstery, the look of @firemangordy and his immaculate purple 55 Chevy just hits the spot.

A great example of what the Chevy Sedans looked like in the late 50s and early 60s in So Cal. (including that cool headliner.)

The pristine green 55 Chevy of our friend was similar in looks and the white upholstery just stood out for blocks with the green paint. It is the best example of the Chevy Sedans during our years as teenagers.
Thanks to HAMB’s @themoose I remember it was a Green Shade with White tuck and roll upholstery that was done in a Long Beach shop.
    upload_2022-6-27_4-55-23.png
The 53 Chevy Bel Air was the first in our group to get the full treatment of all white tuck and roll.
    upload_2022-6-27_4-57-21.png similar in color
The other 56 Chevy 2 door post sedan got smooth white tuck and roll surfaces with some ribbing along the edges. The 4th guy with the Red 40 Ford sedan got white tuck and roll, but in the USA.

No one wanted a button seat design. One, it held too much dust, lint, stuff and the design looked like an old man’s office chair with the button tufting. It was considered old style even in 1961-65.

Sure, the white tuck and roll had grooves that gathered sand, lint and just plain old stuff. But, the button upholstery was a bunch of cups waiting for something to fill them up. Plus, for the difference in comfort, at least the tuck and roll pattern allowed for some flexibility, while the button tufts did not give much.

    Jnaki

But, as the magazines showed, button tuft upholstery was also popular. Sitting in/on the white tuck and roll had comfort for long distance driving and even with towels draped over the tops after a surf session, the rolls were comfortable. Again, the button tufts also reminded all of us of the principal’s office for an official reprimand of some kind… HA!

I have to give it to the low riders , they keep the custom paint and interior over indulgence era going strong that we revered.:)

  30. Its always been associated with the 70s for me, but then I was born way, way after it was popular either time. Usually when I see it today its with a 70s era build.
