Bought my '40 in '65, torn it down in the '70s, and finally drove it out of the shop Memorial Day '22.

Thanks for the compliment and invite, but I need to put some miles on it near home before I take any long trips. :)

Great looking car. I know it's FE Ford engine, 427, 428 ? I'm doing a similar build on a 39. Any info on engine mounts, exhaust, front suspension.
    Thanks Tony

Thanks for the compliment Tony. The engine is a modified 428CJ with many mods including a truck rear sump oil pan, C.E block mounts and biscuits with their cross member which runs just behind the Heidts M11 cross member, and Sanderson headers. I had to rework the left X member to allow the '40 pedal box to move left, allowing more brake pedal clearance with the bell housing. I only recessed the firewall about 4" to maximize leg room but that necessitated switching to the M11 to gain pan clearance keeping the engine as low and forward as possible. Fan clearance is tight (just under 1") but I am going to try and run a 17" fixed 6-blade race fan to start, adding a shallow shroud this winter. I get it aligned tomorrow so I can then start driving and start sorting out any problems.

Made the trip to Spokane this weekend. Had fun cruising with my Son and Granddaughter on Saturday. I also got to meet a fellow HAMBER ( 40LUV) on Friday. That was a real surprise since he is from the East side of our fine country. This picture showed up on GG's web site today. My apologies to the photographer as I had to edit it a little to keep my car from being squished to fit the post.

You should be able to get rid of that electric fan and shroud now.

Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton at Lion’s Dragstrip in the Summer of 1959
    1959

    Hello,

Not all Gas Coupes in the street legal Gas Coupes and Sedan Classes were Willys Coupes and Sedans. (contrary to popular belief) Of course, there were the top two, a 1941 Studebaker and a 1937 Chevy, but look in the background Class Lanes. Behind the Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton “Miss Fire” FED single run in 1959, was a cool looking 1940 Ford Coupe ready for some power runs in the Gas Coupe and Sedan class. (along with what looks to be an old Chevy sedan in the same Class Lanes… )

1940 Ford coupes were the ones to get the ball rolling for street coupes and sedans. But, it takes all kinds to make up a street legal Gas Coupe or Sedan Classes.
    upload_2022-6-20_3-56-40.png

But, sometimes it was hard to take a daily driver 1940 Ford and be competitive in the same B/gas class competition…

When My brother saw a 40 Ford coupe of a friend, he was intrigued, but knew he could get a lighter weight Willys Coupe instead.

40 Willys Coupe weight: 2115 pounds
40 Ford Coupe weight: 2970 POUNDS

An advantage weight savings of 855 lbs. For my brother, that was too much to overcome in selecting the 1940 Ford Coupe. So, the definite Willys Coupe advantage was it for our first build. Plus, he already had his eyes set on a neighborhood Willys Coupe, sitting under a canvas tarp, in a backyard near our Westside of Long Beach house.

40 Ford vs. junior Thompson Studebaker

What was a street legal competitive Gas Coupe/Sedan had many interpretations. That was what the Gas Coupe and Sedan created for the daily hot rod guys/girls in the early days of drag racing. A normal daily driver trying to get the best out of his hot rod was usually the case. It was just competitive as to what was being raced versus driven on the street daily. YRMV

:D That was at York, a few years ago. The electric transformer, where you park is far less attractive.
