  1. So... the other day I was driving from work and I spotted this... 20220615_171524.jpg 20220615_171532.jpg
My first thoughts were "thats a neat little 'vair, it'd be cool to have", so I took a picture, and kept driving. The next day I stopped, as the guy was outside and asked him about it, he was about to leave for work so it was short, but he mentioned one word while we spoke that guaranteed my interest, "Spyder". I pulled only an 8 hour shift and drove home, and pulled into his driveway and asked to look at the car. And so i did.

For a car as sunken into the ground as it is, its amazingly solid, only a couple spots on the floor that require patching. Hes talking with the actual owner, who hasnt touched it in over a decade, about selling it, and im hoping for 750-1250 for pricing, due to it being in decently poor shape. Though, the engine turns, the brake pedal has pressure, and the shifter seemingly works.
Any other thoughts on this turbo 4 speed corvair? I figure this is the one and only time I will be able to find one like this, and I shouldn't let it slip, or I'll regret not being able to own one of my dream cars.

I say go for it. As I wouldn’t mind getting one as they take up less room in the garage. But as a modified or dirt late model on a full frame .

While an early turbo Corvair would definitely peak my interest, do you have room for it? We all seem to have a desire to bring home poor defenseless old cars but you need to look over your abilities and finances to do it.

  4. I have plenty of room, it will be worked on once the '57 is running, driving, stopping, and mostly hole free. Reliable enough to the point where Im comfortable with decently long trips. Financially, as long as its below 1500, i can afford it, besides, this ones coming all the way apart to fix all the corvair issues.

Before you make any decision I'd talk with some of the Covair clubs as some drivetrain parts are unavailable for the early cars.

  6. It turns, I checked, just need to check valves, push rods, push rod tube seals, and such when the engine is out, aswell as a complete resealing of the engine, luckily Ive been reading the forums, and they have a lot of info, this was my dream car long before 57 fords were.

  7. I've got another word for you... SQUIRRELS!!!!
Let's page @swi66 for his thoughts, as he's the resident Corvair fanatic. They are cool little cars, and a Spyder is desirable, so.....

Those are great cars, and everything is available for them. If you're looking for a project, this is a good one.

  9. That is a 110 automatic, not what I'm searching for, I'm dead set on a turbo 4 speed, even if i have to add a turbo, at least a 4 speed.

(Edit) plus that one is 5 hours away, this one is maybe 15 minutes, lot easier to trailer a car that far. Plus, digging is part of the fun...

Turbo is a plus. @Hemi Joel may have access to parts needed. As I recall his father had several Corvairs.
It would be a haul for him, but maybe something could be arranged?

  11. Usually parts are small enough for shipping, at least not in one piece.

I agree, the turbo is everything; a piece of history. And looks to be complete. I was going to say it's a shame the air intake cover is missing, but then I spotted it in the passenger footwell. To give you an idea of value, five years ago I sold a complete Spyder motor for $1200. And I probably could have gotten more if I'd tried.

Close to home has to add to the value, hope the price is right.

I might give $500.00 for it if the floor jack goes with.

Isn't it amazing only 15 minutes from home and you first discover it now and it looks like it has been there a little while.

That is why I always take different routes instead of the same route everyday. Just never know when something will jump out at you even though you drove past it a dozen or more times. I know one thing, you will never drive past it again without looking and making sure it is still there,

Hope you can make a deal on it.

Young man is just starting on an old car, and doing well. Why should he take on something he’s not comfortable with?

  20. I would like to learn on something more... common, so that if i screw up, its not impossible to fix

Not my cup'o tea at all but that is a neat car, one you have been looking for. . . . Drag it out of there and bring it home. Be careful and wear some PPE including a mask when cleaning it out, that old poop is nasty stuff!!

I'd be on that in a heartbeat. I sold a really clean 63 coupe, 102 horse 4 speed about 10 years ago and regretted it ever since. They're unique, fun cars. I haven't found one since that was in good enough condition that I wanted to own it for a price I could afford. This one looks good, floors are there and overall it looks pretty complete. I haven't looked for a while but it used to be you could buy just about everything for those from Clark's, and one other supplier whose name doesn't currently come to mind.

Matter of fact, I have an open space in my garage right now and a little cash. If somebody has an early model coupe in the western US with a good title send me a PM.

my mint 64 was just totaled by an unlicensed Mexican, she pulled in front of me and I Tboned her. I had just put a full set of real knock-off wires on it 82250717_459656904708188_3792205042874843136_n.jpg

My only concern is it's sitting in the dirt. These are unibody cars, and rusty floors equate to a rusty frame.:(

I'm looking at all of the trash covering the cowl.........
Get out a garden hose and check the floorboards for water. You may have more than floors to contend.
