Has it been done? I don't remember seeing any like that offhand. I'm having my frame built, and figured I'd just go with black - at least for now - and am a long way from deciding on body colors.

Anyone got any pics of either an A or '32 done up this way? What do you all think????

Back in the 70s I did a red deuce 2 dr with black frame showing under the body. I liked it but I took a little gas from the deuce police for it. If they don't like it F---um! (SIDE BAR) Car looked good enough to make the cover of ROD ACTION in about 75!

  4. A black frame under a '32 is so right....

What about Milners coupe in American Graffiti? Love it or hate it, every rodder has seen it.

The '32 in my avatar has a yellow frame. It wasn't origionally planned that way as the chassis was going under my 5w. Plans changed and I had been without a hot rod for too long. So...... I decided to put my 2dr body on it temporarily and paint the car later. Almost 7 years and it's still this way. I'd rather drive than work on it. It will be this way until I get something else running.

Also, Limeworks just did a maroon roadster with a black frame. There's a post on here some where.

I just ran into a guy on Sunday. Red body, black frame. Looked just fine to me.

Ford painted ALL the frames and ALL the fenders Black through 1932, regardless of body color.

So, a hotrodder who was in to speed and not just "stylin' like a rodder" would strip just off the (Black) fenders and running boards and go racing.

Ergo, a Black frame is the most traditional color.

A Black frame also allows you to change body color without a every nut & bolt tear down too.

(I think fenders were painted body color starting in '33, but not sure on that .)

What about early 50's ('51-'54)? Would those guys just use the black frame or would they have to paint it because it was twenty years after they rolled off the assembly line. Just wondering what I should do for my coupe's frame. I like the looks of a black frame no matter what body color is.

That black and blue roadster is close to what I had in mind. There was a Ford blue / grey color that was used in the '40s that I think would look sharp with the black frame.

Like Dr.J said, body color can be changed easily also.

34 was the first year for body color fenders.

I've seen a few frames that are different colors than the body. Some looked okay, some didn't. I saw one that had a red frame and a black body. That did NOT look good. It sort of looked like a guy had a good frame and a good body and just threw them together with out any thought or planning.

I think with a black frame though, you can't really go wrong. Black seems to go with just about every other color.

I agree with the historic "correctness" of the black frame.

The issue to me is, a black frame under a bright color body will make the car look like it's higher off the ground. Less so on dark colors like Danny's roadster (yeah, nice wheels!). A black frame also takes some of the thickness out of the side view and makes it look longer.

But if you want a really low look I'd match the frame to the body color.

I did mine with a black frame and a maroon body. Thought about painting it all black or painting the frame maroon. The body paint was maroon when I got it and was still presentable. Limey Steve talked me into keeping the frame black like it was from the factory. Glad he did, looks really good (and old). This photo does not do it justice as it looks way better in person.

I'm having my chassis and some other tidbits powder coated black. Should I do gloss or satin - my powder coater offers 4 levels of gloss-flat. I was thinking one step down from gloss.
The body/hood is going to be TCP Hot Rod Flatz red oxide with a little black mixed it to darken it.
What do you think I should do with the:
    Gas tank
    Grill shell
    BLC headlights
    Split wishbones
    Spreader bars, F/R
    Dashboard
    ???

Couple years ago I built a deuce pickup. Did the frame and grille shell in Satin black, the suspension in gloss black and the sheet metal in satin cement green. I liked it and so does the man in Florida who now owns it.

I'm with Fritz, black frame makes it sorta disappear making the car appear to sit higher. So no.

Don't leave out the body color following the aft. 2/3 reveal section & the forward section a color of choice, usually seen wth a so-cal scallop theme, some make it work others not so much....
