Trying to deal with someone an hour away. This is being listed as Mopar 400. I asked for numbers but they don't understand what I'm trying to explain. Curious if this at least looks like a 400 and maybe what year/ era. I don't have anything to compare it with to truly know. Just a really great deal if it's a 400. Of course I'll look at the pad and verify everything for myself. It's just that it's a hour drive one way and I don't want to make the trip if it's obviously not what I'm wanting. *Edit* it's supposed to say "it's over a two hour drive one way" I agree with all of you. If it was only an hour I'd have jumped in the truck already.
If it is only an hour away, I would just go look. On heavy traffic days it can take me an hour just to reach the Southern city limits.
Drove my 3w coupe 1/2 hour west to watch the sunset, then 1/2 hour home. Took 2 beers, and 1 1/2 gallons of gas, a bargain I figure
that's the oil pressure switch for the idiot light. There are big casting numbers and casting dates on the sides of the block, they're not that hard to see. As well as the numbers stamped on the front of the block. But most folks don't seem to have any interest in numbers, they prefer rumors.
If it is a 400 there are kits to make it a 452 by using a 440 crank....400 had a larger bore than a 440...
Big block MOPAR! sweet mystery of life I think I've found you! Credit to Madeline Kann from the movie Young Frankenstein.
Valve cover and engine mount say it is at least a 1973 version of either 400 or 440. The photos do not show the ID pad at the front so difficult to determine. Yes, on the side of the block there will be a string of casting numbers and will say 400 or 440. The orange intake is pre-70.
we used to measure the height from bell housing mount to bottom of intake to tell r from rb, but i can't remember the measurements it's only been about 38 years since i played with mopar.
you can tell from the picture that it's a short deck block. The bolts are right at the ends of the strip that holds the valley pan in place. They're a ways from the end on the RB engines.
Looks like 73RR is giving you a little hope! If it were me, I'd grab the significant other, pack a lunch, hop in the car and go! 4 hr round trip? Make a day out of it. Sounds about 100 miles away. Easy peasy!
In hunting cheap, greasy parts, I will often find a good picture of identifying marks from the internet and circle them on my phones picture editor. Then I send them to who is selling the part so they aren't helplessly taking pictures of every useless number cast into the thing.
