Technical What did you do with your car today? * NEW*

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by j hansen, May 3, 2020.

  1. I bought the car from the guy who brought from CO to WI within 6 months of it arriving in WI. Easily the most solid car I have ever had. Maybe time now for a road trip for some beer tasting. Having lived in Milwaukee my whole life, I'm rather good at that !

Took the old Vette out to test the new rear view mirror, lol. The dash mounted mirror is useless with Buddy riding bitch, just see his furry fat head. I got a suction cup cell phone holder at Dollar Twenty Five Tree, stuck an old mirror in it, good to go.

First stop was Harbor Freight to use the 25% off Memorial day coupon. Picked up this Auto Plastic Fastener assortment, 10 bucks (less 25%). :)

On the way back stopped by the local Nike missile site for a bit of Memorial day remembrance. Here is a photo from back in the '60s. The missiles were underground in the hill, military offices in the foreground, now abandoned buildings.

    Screenshot 2022-05-30 2.56.27 PM.png

Decommissioned by the time I reached beerhood, so we frequently used the silos as an underground party spot. Huge underground rooms. Finally they just piled dirt on top of the hatches, this is how it looks today.

Wife waited patiently during the hike.

If you're ever in the area, there is a restored Nike site that gives tours, an afternoon well spent. Also a short hike to some pill boxes still sitting on the coastal cliffs.

I have been working on a SBC that is needing a little shaping up . 180 lbs compression on all the cylinders so I am going to change the valve stem seals and also went ahead and pulled the intake. Overall it looked pretty good with some crude laying in the lifter valley. A quick clean up with the shop vac and on to the next step. It is good that I tore this down, in the photo showing the rockers you can see the number 5 intake rocker is dry. It is safe to say the push rod is stopped up. Attended local neighborhood car show with the coupe and helped local 85-year old resident relive some memories.

  16. After a few interruptions over the last couple of months I finally finished welding and grinding today, even tacked in the engine and steering gear mounts so I can start with the powertrain mock-up. 115 unneeded holes filled, stepped the rear crossmember and boxed the entire thing. This '31 roadster still has a LONG way to go...

I wire tied the speedo cable housing so it won't slide off the flanged end in the future. Took out for a ride and all is well. Tomorrow I need to start cleaning.

It came out pretty good considering what I started with. Stainless Steel is much harder than aluminum to polish. 3A324E5D-24CF-4508-B694-7BDF28EA5B76.jpeg AF79CA16-8C1C-40E9-A5DD-4CAA4A4910E5.jpeg

What did I do with my car today? It’s 75 degrees and sunny. My son has a baseball game in a town about 20 miles south of me, and I have a beautiful, no traffic, drive there. So I drove it! :) Life is good!

Finally got my SBC in my '39 Chev coupe back together! After having to replace all the roller lifters because they were damaged by a supplier who sold me hardened pushrods to use with the guideplates on my new Dart aluminum heads, but sent me non hardened pushrods! The pushrods wore and the fine metallic particles jammed up the hydraulic roller lifters, ruining several, so I just replaced them all.
Had to completely clean the whole engine, and flush the oiling passages. Of course new oil and filter, plus a new set of hardened pushrods, along with the new Howard's roller lifters. But I fired it up yesterday, and she's running sweet again! Now time to put more miles on the old gal!

  29. Was trying to figure out what to do about six different nuts on my dash switches and came across some covers they make for the toggle switches on a Peterbilt. A couple fit right on, cut down one nut and made a bushing to adapt another. Probably solved an insignificant problem; but I like how they are the same now.

  30. Drove it to work since my wife needed my daily beater. Folks seemed surprised for me to drive it on a rainy day for some reason. That was even without knowing I don’t have windshield wipers... :D
