Technical ***June 2022 Banger Meet Thread - June Already?***

It looks like the Murray Horn damper. I had Murray make a custom one with grooves for a serpentine belt. He still makes them. Doesn't have a website. I just communicated with him by email. Very easy to work with.

I bought a new Super Damper for a small block Chevy to put on my B engine. With serpentine grooves, about 5 inch if I remember correctly off ebay. Haven't had time to adapt it yet. A hundred bucks.

We have a Prince Henry Vauxhall in at work at the moment which has a similar styled radiator.

I was told that stock Kelsey Hayes' won't fit over cast iron rear drums. Sorry to say, but that's very much true. I had to do more grinding than I wanted to get them to fit, but I think they're still fundamentally sound.

Also, does it ever happen to you, that you collect things for a project, they sit around forever and the day you go to finally use them, you notice something that you never saw before? My "matched" set of Kelseys isn't so at all. If you look closely, these wheels are different. Maybe Motor Wheel? Close enough for me, but when you notice subtle things like this you start to think you're going a little crazy.

Now off for blasting and paint (black).

 

I'm working on finishing up a project now and clearing up some space in the shop for the chassis, will mock up some brackets for the seat, and work on how the radiator will be attached to the frame. The vintage racing season is in full swing now and am busy preparing two cars for that as well.

An early Prince Henry Vauxhall is a very rare and interesting car, you are lucky to have one!

 

Is that a stock Model A color combination? If so what is it, I really like it. Bob

 

We have some special cars through here from time to time. I'm more on a beer budget though so not likely to end up with anything that special in my shed. They are nice to work on though.

 

Hey Kid, I believe it is a stock color combo. Chicle Drab and Copra Drab with a straw stripe.

Well, lesson learned. I replaced all the washer gaskets and the car seems to run fine. Several trips of about 4 miles each. Then I replaced the overly long water outlet studs. At 35# the damn thing snapped. Fortunately I am not too far from Al at go devil and he fixed me up with a spare and a copper gasket.

Simmons Super Power Head, Dual 81's Burns intake and red's Header and it all runs smooth. Stock distributor but with Renners cap that runs wires.

 

finally got my stuck brake drum off . had to cut it up to finally got it off . but onward & upward ............

I never fit a gasket under the water outlet. Learnt my lesson breaking them in the past… I normally lap the outlet to the head and use a thin skim of sealant.

 

The engine is in the Speedster. Progress is slow ( might be me), decided to go with DCOE Carburetors, I liked the look of the Velocity Tubes. I thought it would be simple, but everything requires some fabrication.

 

Hay guys, I had to go clear to page 10 to find this month's blog. No one doing anything with their bangers?
I'll have to bump it back up with a question. I have been looking for an external oil pump to be driven off the front of the cam gear for pressurized system on my Chevy banger. Not having much luck so far. Any suggestions? About all that I have found currently is 4-cylinder jeep, 6-cylinder flat head Mopar, and big block Mopar. None of these turn my crank. You could try a Barnes single stage.

I don't think that oil pump was around in the 20's

 

So far, I'm not finding anything that looks close to 20'ish, need to widen my looking somehow or hide the new one. Things that were around when I was a kid are not now!

Mine made it to Pendine Sands in May and ran pretty good. We get a half mile run up from standstill, then our speed it calculated by measuring the time taken to pass through the 330 foot timed section.
This year my car did 102mph at 4300rpm. There’s a bit more to be had with a few minor tweaks for next year.
For this year I changed the car up a bit too. Cutting the cowl off in front of the doors and fab’ing up a new shorter and wider one. 32 grill shell. New hood and sides. Changed it over to centre steer and mounted the radiator in the turtle deck.
This year I found the Saturday early morning sand very slippery, and still sawing at the wheel in the timed section. An old iPhone with a couple of magnets glued on the back stuck to the dash with a speedo App I could see that my entry speed at the first flag was 100mph. Still accelerating I had s timed speed of 102.06mph.
The second run on Saturday afternoon the sand felt better, much less sawing at the wheel, and once into third (top) gear it was stable. I entered the timed section at 102mph but a step out at the rear knocked it down to 99mph at the exit flags.

Over night I removed the headlamps and fitted a couple of flat washers under the dump valve spring in an attempt to get a bit more speed for the Sunday.
Sadly though, a strong headwind put pay to beating any of Saturdays speeds.
Quite happy for now though, and the car ran great and never missed a beat. Only the second ever vintage 4 banger to get over the 100mph in the 10 years it’s been running, and a bit faster than a fair few flathead V8’s and even some of the overhead valve V8’s too.

@grumpy gaby 2 for a front mounted old timey looking pump I would look at maybe a John Deere 820 oil pump or if you want one mounted on the side of the block driven off generator or similar might look at the Detroit 71 series oil pump. It would need a bit of modifying but could work.

 

Not bad speeds considering you fellas are running on sand; and our old buggies are about as aerodynamic as a galleon at full sail! Keep up the good work!

 

Thanks Studebakerjoe! The John Deere 820 looks pretty good, but I don't see a pressure relief valve. Will have to figure that too. The only problem for me is that I was raised on nothing but RED tractors! I'll just have to close my eyes! I also see what you mean about the Detroit 71 modification for side mount. Thanks! Decided to mess around in the shed for a bit today, and got things looking a little bit better!
Just need a battery and the yellow engine will fire!
