Hallman’s Chevrolet was a longtime auto dealership in Rochester, the last dealership to remain downtown, and, at one point, one of the top Chevy dealerships in the country. Its Art Deco showroom, topped by an enormous clock, became an enduring city landmark. After more than a half-century in business, Hallman’s closed and its site on luxurious East Avenue sat vacant for years before the city of Rochester bought the property. Redevelopment of the site kick-started a downtown housing boom. The distinctive showroom has been preserved and home for years to a popular coffee shop. And although Hallman’s Chevrolet has been gone for years in Rochester, another Hallman’s Chevrolet run by family members still exists not too far from here. Maynard W. Hallman started the business during the Great Depression. The Rochester native had already been in the auto business since the 1920s, having started at a Cadillac dealership called Mabbett Motors. Hallman Chevrolet closed in 1991 and the iconic East Ave. Art Deco building which is now multi use, still remains and received landmark status in 1992. Maynard Hallman died in 1994. We had a Cousin who worked in the body shop there back in the 70's and 80's.
