Was there someone who posted about this intake? It was a topic of discussion this morning at out weekly Hotrod Group meeting.
I do recall some chatter about that thing but cannot recall any details. Not even sure what you would use as a search term.....
I was always wondering about the linkage too. Couple pics with carbs; but most of the linkage is still a mystery.
Jag had an intake similar in the 69’s on there inline 6’s with 4 carbs the Center one was a smaller carb mounted sideways only used for warm up. maybe this is a similar idea
IIRC there was someone running a straight 6 (or maybe 8) with 5 carbs. His reasoning for 5 was because 6 wouldn't fit. Sorry no photos or other details.
When I raced vintage dirt track, I couple of guys ran Buick straight eights. I remember at least one with 5 97's. I think that was more of an economic move than a space problem. I have also seen GMC sixes with 5 97's.
Were the penta-carbs running on plenum type manifolds, or individual runners? Number of carbs doesn't matter overly with a plenum, but gets pretty funky balancing runners. Cheers, Harv
this looks photoshopped so I photoshopped some more in for help. I mean hell why not 7?? Nevermind me.. Just something for at the end of my workday
IIRC, the Buick at least was a plenum; I seem to remember it was a sheet metal box about 4" square that had flanged tubes going to the intake ports.
Cool. There is a part of me that wants to own a straight-eight. No idea what I'd do with one, but they are a beautiful machine. (the same part of me wants a Merlin engine too ) Cheers, Harv
When I built my engine test-run stand, I made it extra long in case I would run into a 320 ci Buick. (A 356 ci Packard with a 9 bearing crankshaft would also do.)
One of the original Sydney HAMBsters had a straight 8 but with just one carb. As far as I know he still owns it but hasn't raced it for a long time.
Don't know his name but can probably get it from the Qld boys. I think there's an early Day of the Drags video with it.
This popped up in my Facebook group the other day. https://www.macsmotorcitygarage.com...592i1Aoq94SG0jlAdZZ4Exp-ZbhnkEkQLF9HvjdxZnkGI
Couple of more pics. I looked it up on one of the Pontiac sites. One of the guys from back in the day was familiar with the setup.he said the center carb ran the idle circuit.
The second picture (on the right) is the engine from a '53 Ford X 100 concept car. https://www.macsmotorcitygarage.com/inspector-gadgets-dream-car-the-1953-ford-x-100/
Here's one from the archives of New Zealand. GMC 6 cylinder 270? [overhead valve with 3 siamesed intake ports , and 4 exhaust ports]
That first manifold is an early Olds, look at the water crossover. Second is Pontiac, mid ‘50’s had that type thermostat mount and the third is clearly a Y-Block, as @Speed Gems commented. It’s got custom headers, four Holley 94’s and that center carb is a Holley Teapot.
Whether it worked or not, it's so cool to see the old hot rod ingenuity that was used back in the day!
As I recall from what I'd picked up, these were a sort of minor thing for a short time. Early ones were made by grafting carb bases and runners into existing single-2bbl manifolds. Subsequently a few got cast that way, so it must have been successful enough to warrant that effort at least. I've also heard about more than one instance of Scott MFI being run in the outer positions, with a 2-bbl in the middle. The idea of a setup in which the fuel injection only comes in as you approach WOT has long appealed to me. It makes perfect sense given a commitment to the sort of technological palette we prefer here.

There were some 6 carb setups at eagle field over the years. I think Meagan, friends with Hotrodladycruzer bought a 5 carb manifold like the one in the picture.
No, this isn't truly functional, it was on a vendors table down at the Portland swap-meet a number of years ago, purely as a lure with an outrageous price tag as well. Still it was a pretty cool set up, how ever dysfunctional it was.
