It would be cool to be there! Speaking of wishing you were there, My mom use to say, "If wishes were horses all beggars could ride" HRP
Went to ElMirage for my 69th birthday(5 years ago) weather was perfect 60-68 degrees all day long,no wind. Watched over 100-120 race cars of all types go down the 1.3 mile long course. Land is owned by the Feds so it was only $7.50 for an all day pass. Very friendly people—nobody minded extra pair of eyes looking at their “rides”. Went to H & H Flatheads on Friday prior to meet and ended up in the pits with them on Saturday. They set a record of 124 mph(10 mph higher than previous) running a model a block with Joe Hunt mag and Hillborns in their built to look period racer. I took many pics and one in particular show the rock hard compacted soil that is hard enuf so when a powerful car left the line could squeal the tires on a dirt surface.
Got 4 hamber’s that liked the pics so I thought I would add some more. The fastest “car” of the day belonged to Don Ferguson Jr(yes he makes the newer ARDUN) ran 260 mph on the 1.3 mile long course with a “streamliner”(probably not correct terminology) I believe the car was powered by a blown Honda 4 banger. Remember, these pics are 5 years old and I am sure many different racers have come and gone since then.
Been to El Mirage many times. Made a lot of passes there. Of all my times on that lake bed only one day I wish I'd stayed home.
Cool, I was trying to watch it on the Land speed Racing site this morning but my internet had the Saturday slows. That blue 38/39?? Ford belongs to Bill Ross who has built a number of custom cars and a few rods. Great photos, thanks for sharing.
Lots of buffering…but they are trying! Being out in the middle of nowhere sure doesn’t help. If you slide the bar to the left, you can find some non- buffering spots worth watching. The #203 yellow gas roadster is, I believe the, “Mayor of El Mirage” almost setting a record.
Did anybody get any pictures of the XO/PP GMC truck? It was bright blue, late 30’s, early 40’s, looked very well done. I just never had a chance to find it and then when the streamliner took out the lights at over 303 mph all of us patrols all had to go help sweep up the mayhem and I never saw it again.
Didn't get any pics of that truck but saw it run and it was very nicely done.had a 302 GMC and went 1 mph below the record I believe.something like 109 on a 110 record
