Art & Inspiration Moving road trip

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1930artdeco, May 16, 2022.

  1. I saw the topic on road trips so thought I would add my own little road trip. Not totally HAMB as my car is mostly stock, but when I put the big carb on she scoots right along.

Left Walnut Creek at 0915 and arrived in Redding at the hotel about 1445. So about 6.5 hrs or so, not bad. Averted a big catastrophe when I felt the radiator and it was cold so I added more water and antifreeze-a lot more. Then I remembered she has a crack in the block either at a exh vale/water jacket into the cylinder or into the exh manifold. So after driving some and feeling lots of engine heat and checking her radiator I can confidently say that if I am super warm, the radiator has not lost any coolant.

I am thoroughly enjoying just getting her on the freeway and cruising about 50-55. She really needs an OD and that is on the list of goodie to buy when I restore her. Next up is the Siskiyou pass and into Oregon. I expect rain so I added several coats of Rain X to windshield, so that when the vacuum wiper does not work (like that would ever happen) the rain X is there to take over. Plus I have lots of towels for the inside of the car. Hope all goes well tomorrow.

    You are a bad ass.

Have fun and be careful on your journey. Hopefully, the big carb helps you get over the pass.

Congratulations on your decision to migrate North!
As a native Californian, that left the San Joaquin Valley back in 79, to be here in Seattle, I applaud your decision!
Not knocking Lynden, I used to live in Bellinham, I hope you have a good safe trip, to your new home!
Take lots of pictures along the way!

  11. I will take as many as I can, seeing as how I am doing this solo, there may not be as many as I like. It will be great to move back to the PNW as I grew up outside of Portland.

Sounds like a fun trip, keep us posted as to your progress as you go even if it is just a quick stopped in ______ for gas and lunch kind of thing. I'm on the east side of the Cascades on 97 so I can't help if you need anything but we have plenty of Hambers all along the I 5 corridor from Grant's pass on.

While most nervous folk would have used a flat deck hauler. Where are the memories in that approach. Good luck and post more of the adventures please.

I drove my Hotrod to my new home several years ago...It was certainly a milestone in that it was the, and still is the longest one way drive I've ever embarked on around 240 or so miles one way...It was a fun drive mostly spent around 50 to 60 mph with a plethora of small towns dotting the entire journey...I took my time as you did with the goal being making it before the sun goes down...It took near 8hrs with gas, back and body breaks...this Hotrod of mine is raw and anything but ergonomic...I suspect a stock A may be slightly more comfortable...I stayed off the freeways but spent a short time on one and opened up the butterflies a bit...

May your journey be equally special...

Mine was memorable and trouble free...

  17. Right now I am running the stock Zenith carb. I also have a Marvel/Allstate carb that has a slightly bigger throat so that I can cruise at 55-60. I just forgot to put it on before I left and knowing my luck if I installed it now for the fun of it the fuel line would break. And I don’t have a spare one of those. Hopefully no rain today until tomorrow. But I am going over the pass today so it will be a long nervous day until I get to canyonville. Once I get into the Willamette Vally I will feel a bit better as I will have cell service and access to AAA if something goes wrong. Learned something yesterday, always buy a car cover 2-3 sizes to big for our cars. I bought this one for my 57 wagon and I barely partially fit.

  21. Just pulled into 7 feathers casino for the night. I could have gone further but a friend of mine told me they have security that drives around the lot. So I decided on the extra safety. Car ran very well on the freeway but had idle and top end issues. Found the issue and 20 minutes in a NAPA parking lot was all it took. Idles much better now and a little more top end. After she cools down I am going to go out and adjust her points. They are new and I think they are wearing in so a regap is probably in order.

It looks like you aren't doing too bad though. The Indian casinos usually have a plenty of security cameras covering the parking lot along with patrols. At least the one here does.

That's great progress, I know you probably are not planning on attending the Monroe swap meet this weekend, but you should be able to attend the lunch at the Longhorn Saloon, in Edison Washington, at the end of the month, that @Hitchhiker has organized!
What a great trip you are having!

  27. Made it to Portland to my parents house for the night. So far she seems to be getting 16.5+ mpg, not bad going through the mountains. Hit some rain along the way but Rain X took care of that. Even tested the cruise control out for a bit. Tomorrow I am off to Puyallup. Yeah, won’t make the swap meet but sill try and make the lunch.

    Way cool Mike!
You are definitely on the home stretch of this journey, that's amazing that the banger is getting that kind of gas mileage!

Sure says a lot about how tough those engines were considering the technology for the time they were manufactured!

I am almost tempted to go hang out at a place over looking I-5, downtown tomorrow to potentially get a few shots of the car as you pass through Seattle.

You may want to stop at Pick Quick drive in, at fife for the best hamberger and fries and shakes in the state.
Text me at 206-227-2503 when you are going through Tacoma, and if the weather is good, I will try to get an over head shot of the car.
I will be shooting from the 45th street overpass which has a great view of I-5 Northbound.
    Thanks from Dennis.

That shouldn't be a bad run tomorrow, I'd think about cutting off at Grand mound and going though Tenino and Yelm rather than face the traffic between Oly and the 512 Cutoff though. Screenshot (46).png
