Technical ***April 2022 Banger Meet Thread - Don't Be Fooled by 5***

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Jiminy, Apr 1, 2022.

  1. Posted this on the main board but some of you may not always go there.
A friend sent me this pic of a 32 banger powered roadster that he's thinking about buying out of CA.
Brookville body, everything else is original Henry. It's PERFECT!
Anybody recognize it, or better yet, is the owner? I'm very envious.

  2. Well, call off the search. It was on the ‘bay last week, offered by “flathead-Ed” in Murrieta.

Thanks @johnneilson. I am still figuring out the rest of the puzzle. Cam...intake...carbs, everything else is up in the air. This will be atop a Burtz.

  8. Be realistic about your usage
The race car gets injection but the daily driver has only a single 94 carb
The Burtz will be a good platform to start with

Yes. I'm seeking solid, reliable (by A standards) drivable horsepower.

Currently thinking dual downdraft + 81s but seeking opinions/advice where I can get it.

I have Weber 32/36 carbs on my flathead banger and CRAGAR B engine. Easy to tune and no leaks

Thanks @denis4x4 - that's just the kind of input I am looking for. I will add them to my list of considerations.

I'm running two 1 3/4" SU carburetors with a police head, mild Brierley cam (C, I think? I'll have to check) and homemade exhasust. I'm happy with them. No idea about numbers, though.

Whoa. I haven't seen those before. Those are pretty! ...and apparently quite expensive. I'll look into them further.

    Thanks.

I attached a flyer for an Early V-8 Ford, Model A & B Swap Meet in early June. In Brighten (NE Denver), Colorado. I thought is was for two days, but flyer has only one day.

Call Chuck Smith ( info on flyer) to confirm.

This is our Burtz/Miller Engine we ran in the 2022 Great Race.
    The Specifics are:
Brierley M-13 Cam; Good Street, good low end torque
Stipe Oil Pump with Remote Oil Filter (John Nielson’s Pump would work as well)
    FSI Electronic Ignition
Single Stromberg 97 Carburetor (Used to meet Great Race Rules, for Street, I would recommend a Weber as Dennis 4X4 recommended)
Ceramic Coated JE Pistons (the pistons recommended by Terry’s Build Instructions are fine)
    Bronze Timing Gear

There's a pair of h6's on the auction site right now for just over 200 bucks. I got my pair from the classifieds here for around that. Cheaper than a couple of 81s would have been by a long shot. I like them. Had to make the manifold, but that's another story.

    Ford 2N 8N 9N Distributors
Thinking ahead on my unconventional OHV conversion, it might be easier to to fashion a cam snout driven distributor as I can not mount a dizzy thru the head. I don't have a tractor dizzy here, does anyone know if they have centrifugal advance, if they do I can modify a Pertronics type unit to work. This tractor dizzy is compact and has side spark lead outlets like the crab flathead dizzys. I may have to figure out an external oil pump arrangement also if I go that way.

Took mine out for its first real blast up the road since the rebuild. What a huge difference a few hop ups make! 54A79732-2DD2-4B9C-A9A2-F1DE14687FEA.jpeg

Thanks for all the info on recommended carbs.

So here's an even better question...Are dual carbs necessary to get the most out of the Serr Miller head? Or can you get away with a single without sacrificing much?

My use case is get in and drive!

Here is a Ford 9N Dist adv weight and spring assembly, I think you can do it.
Pertronics has a kit for the 9N.
    Google is your friend
I have a tractor side drive I sometimes think about fitting to the cam gear, I also have an A engine governor that bolts up to the cam gear.

Great info I appreciate it , just thought it would look good out front and solve a problem. Will most likely look into using a V8 flathead oil pump instead of outside driving from the cam gear, but it is too soon to say. I have never seen a governor drive, if I had one of those I would really try to mount a pump tp it, if you hear of one that is available, I am in the market.
    Thanks Again

  24. Steve,
be careful on the governor drives, they run at crank speed.
Have done this cam drive a few times, it works extremely well.

We have a Single Stromberg 97’ with .045 Main Jets that runs fine on the street, more details regarding engine a few posts up.
It had 80HP on chassis Dyno, I think it was ~3600 RPM. We are also above 5,000 feet in Colorado.
