Hot Rods Does anyone ever use 14" wheels/rims anymore?

My 40 has 14” on the front, 15” rears. Came that way from a couple previous owners.

 

In the 60s, my first set of radials were 14s. (Goodyear Polyglass radials.)
I hunted around for some 15s to mount the 15" slicks I had. I bought a pair of 15" Corvette steelies because I needed the "little" GM wheel pattern because the "big" GMs wouldn't fit.

Well we are in ALABAMA

 

I ran 14 inch wheels on the front of the 38 up until about two years ago, I had to go to 15 inch wheels to clear larger brakes Now I have four of the old five spokes that I should sell. The like new 15+ year old tires are gone,

 

I have been a fan of this type of wheel ever since the 60's.

14's on Front, BIG15's on back of Avatar...sits rather level, except when driving down-HILLs !

 

Clarence currently has 14/15. They've been on there 30 years. However, when he comes back from paint I'm thinking about 15's all around. OR 16" early Ford style steelies with beauty rings and '41 Ford caps.

 

For those that said 14's are hard to find. Wally world listed 13K options (14 and under was the closest search filter)

I have 14's on the front of my roadster with Firestone cross ply's. Only because I'm a dumb ass and went from disc brakes to drum brakes from a locally manufactured 60's car down here, lol. Then realised how hard it was to get cross ply tires in 14 inch, but that's another story, cheers

 

15 x 7 & 14 x 6 Solids on my pickup (Avatar) 285/70r15 & 195/70r14. Painted them Tacoma Cream in 1989. The 14's clear the calipers by a 1/16".....Also have a same size set of 60's Americans to swap sometimes. Took me 2 years to polish them in/out. No Mas ! great thread I have a similar set of Western Superlights & I think another set of Americans. Would sell. Too freakin old for polishing ....Alan

 

Yes, but those are all pretty small. You can't find anything bigger than 215/75, unless you go to one of the specialty suppliers like Coker or Diamondback.

 

Stuart thats true. I just bought 4 215's for my O/T car I have at the local C0-0P. $90 a piece with road hazard mounted and balanced.

 

I have a set of 14" mags to use if I find the right car for them.
Most of my old Mopars have stock 14" wheels on them. I've found the best place to get tires for them is ebay and Amazon.

I prefer the 15 and even the 16-in but about 1957 up into early '70 the 14-in was a standard size. The only general exception to the 14-in were like Cadillac and probably Lincoln and Chrysler too...

True, but I think anyone running 14s is probably not worried about filling up the rear wheelwells. On my 54 the 215s looked great in back

 

My 34 five window has 14's on the front and 15's on the rear.

 

14" tires are fine if the side wall is tall enough to be proportional to the car.

BTW, my favorite 14" factory wheel is the Pontiac 8-lug.

 

14" wheels were common on many early 60s full size cars. My Pontiac would have had something like 8.25 or 8.55-14 tires, so a modern equivalent would be 225/75 or 235/75 (I think some Chryslers even used a 9.00-14.) I have 8 lug wheels and don't want to replace them - they can be converted to 15" rims which probably is the best choice in the end, but that costs money.

 

Have you looked at the avail of 15 inchers? I think they are worse off than 14s!
