I painted inside of the cab, the jambs and the engine compartment. I had someone with actual skills shoot the exterior sheet metal...

Yes, back in the day and several of my racers in my time. I'm not a pro, just a hobby car guy, bodywork paintwork has always been expensive IMO, you tend to get what you pay for, paint jail usually involved and some paint work I paid for was just like I can do, sags, overspray, dirt, fish eyes, etc. The biggest part is the prep, block sanding over and over, the mess it makes, IMO the spray gun part is pretty easy. A few years back my 51 Mercury had some road rash after 7 years and many miles, the quotes I was getting $2500/$3500. I'm retired, more time than money (I hope) I went to paint store, left about $500 there for various materials & paint. Around 20+ hours of my time, some garage mess involved, it turned out pretty good, friends want me to do paintwork for them, my answer is NO. Too much work/mess. Pic's in my albums. I guess it's at what level you want to play with your hobby cars, Best of show was never my goal, all my cars are drivers and I'm a DIY guy.

Lots of nice work guys, I myself am not a painter, unless a rattle can job and a scotch brite pad to knock the shine off, counts .

I swapped roofs as it was a rollover so I had to paint the interior, I just painted a little bit more. Ford of Canada 1963 F100 Garden Turquoise metallic (TT) and Wimbledon white.

I've done some award winning paint work and some large volume painting too. (Concrete Mixers) The paint materials have evolved over time and the manufacturers won't always admit when they have made a change, but when you spray a lot, you can tell. Always read the material data sheets when mixing new products because at least you have a great starting point. The great thing about a paint booth and using the same brand of paint is you can create consistent quality jobs day in and day out.

IMG_3880.jpg IMG_3877.jpg Unmasked, and there are a few little problems here and there, but this has far far surpassed my own expectations. I'm pissing my pants to put the truck together now.

I've painted 2 of my deuce pickups. The first Black suede with a gun in my one stall garage in the early 90's and the second in the early 2000's. The second one I painted Satin Black using Krylon back when it was a good paint. Figured out how to do it without dry spots or streaks. Was good enough for a feature in the October 05 issue of Rod And Custom. I'm thinking of doing my latest deuce roadster with shake and shoot after seeing Fuller's 32 roadster.

  12. Been painting all my stuff for over 40 years more of out of necessity than anything else. At first it was because I could not afford someone doing the work, later on didn't want any of my stuff to end up in body & paint jail. I'm to the point now where I really don't mind block sanding a car out anymore. I put on Bill Haley and the Comets greatest hits and away I go, probably heard that CD 200 times over the years and it puts me in the mood and takes me back. My shoulders and back though are letting me know I only have a couple more spray jobs in me. It's always been harder on my body spraying the car, then doing the body work which takes about 95% more time, I know, weird.

  18. I painted all my cars over the years, the best ones were done in the old type lacquer. That stuff was so easy to fix any mess-up and smelled so good also! A few years ago I bought some of that cheap-ass lacquer off of the internet and will never do that again. It is just not like the old lacquer, not as hard, will not buff to as good of a shine etc.. But the worst thing is, if I spill a little gas on it around the tank fill it KILLS the paint. I guess the alcohol in the gas attacks the paint. NEVER will do that again.
I painted a hood and fender on my daughter's car years ago with base/clear and it came out ok but I looked at the two stage thing as just another step to screw up, so I have avoided doing that again.
BUT last week i was involved in painting a Mustang with my son-in-law base coat/clear coat, we painted this car in a garage so there was a lot of dirt and a few runs in the clear, also we had a little orange peel in the clear. I was surprised that it all sanded and buffed out!
Someone said earlier in this thread that you can do a lot of fixing with the clear coat and that is true!

For a guy who doesn't do it all day, every day, I've gotten reasonably good. I've washed a LOT of doors and quarter panels. It's like skiing, if you're not falling, you're not learning and pushing yourself.

Too poor to have someone paint it, and too impatient to do it myself. I know having a custom I shouldn't be saying this :D

This was painted in the garage 10 years ago by myself and some buddies, Its far from perfect but did the job and kinda has a unique look. Its not got scratches and dents in some places, but she also has ran more miles than most also. About time for another full rebuild. There is orangepeel in the silver gloss, the satin black base is John Deere Blitz black with Shopline Single stage enamel Dodge silver on top. All in all this paint job cost me 600 bucks with all the supplies etc. Best part is it was done by myself and friends in my garage.

I think that some cars need the paint to hit the places they were built to be. Others are meant to be driven and decent quality. Brush paint jobs were traditional. Single stage is traditional. Primer is traditional. Some of my favorite cars built are Red oxide primer...

I like what the builder can do themselves not what they can pay for. But that's me.

57 Fargo and unfinished like this.
  24. Last one I've painted, just slightly OT....Next one will be a hood less, fender less Model A Vicky which should more than make up for the amount of block sanding on the wagon ! MCIX6787.JPG

Both owner garage built and painted. Jeff Greene's Chevy is base - clear. I don't know what brand. My 27 was shot with Omni single stage acrylic cut and buffed, no clear. DSCN1335 (4).JPG

I’ve painted all my vehicles for decades because i work real cheap. A friend demonstrated painting/mixing many years ago on my daily and I never paid for painting services again. 0CCCFCD4-B021-4E86-BA8A-C459C74E2C53.jpeg
