Technical Removing melted plastic from my headers

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Dino 64, Apr 4, 2022.

  1. I own a powder coat shop and have done lots of ceramic coating on exhausts. If your exhaust is truly ceramic coated and not just high temp painted, you should be able to "pluck" it off with a knife or scraper when the exhaust is cooled off. Ceramic coat is tough shit, not much effects it or sticks to it!

  2. I did contract work for him for years. If I did work in his shop, I made sure anything hazardous was put away. He closed up shop a few years back and is semi-retired up state NY.

I was always careful around chemicals even when I fixed cars. I'd see guys washing their hands at the Safety Kleen sink, or use carb cleaner. One parts place I bought from had a hot-tank close to the parts counter. Go home and I'd still have the stink on me. I can't imagine working there 8 hours a day was good for your health.

I would try cranking the motor, let it get hot. When the plastic gets as hot as it did when it initially melted try to
scrape it off. It seems if it got hot enough to melt once it may well scrape off when that hot again. Just a thought.

Ok, thanks for all the suggestions. I called Sanderson today. The tech said guys try all kinds of things but if worse case, he can recover it. I mentioned propane low heat and a wipe off. He said never heard of that one, give it a shot !.
So I did. Waited till it got a little gooey, then a very gentle scrape with a knife. Once it started to loosen, I used an extra fine scotch bright pad with acetone. Slowly came off. Yay !!:):)

  5. Glad you got it off Dino, good job!

Full disclosure, afterwards I used a buffing wheel with some hard metal polish and was able to match the shine that was partially dulled by the Scotch Btite pad.
    One last detail ;)

DO NOT USE AN N-95 MASK!! IT WILL CONCENTRATE THE FUCKIN FUMES AND TOXINS IN THE MASK!! Only a regular paint respirator, N-95 is particle only. Fuck...

I think there may be some confusion regarding our deadly chemicals. Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide is a catalyst for setting off polyester resin. Without the peroxide it is a solvent. I think the Methyl Eats The Shit Out Of Most Things that you might be thinking of is Methylene Chloride. Used in strippers (the "good old" ones anyhow).
I'm glad he wiped it off, looks good. I was told a story about a girl that covered a hot motorcycle once. The bike shop used oven cleaner to get most of it off. Mike

Thanks Highlander. Was only a guess, as I haven't used them for that. & if I did use it, it would only be for that short time needed, then tossed, *never* reused. I do have paint respirators.

I had the same thing happen. After trying a few things, I gave up and just drove it. The next time I drove it the spot was gone....completely gone

  21. It depends on the condition of your ceramic, yours looks pretty good to start. I have seen more fails than successes! You done well, and yes, that location was my guess. Not that it stands out

  26. Glad this all worked out, Dean. I surely didn't have an answer, so I just listened to all of the responses. I personally wouldn't ever use MEK for anything. Just too dangerous.

I hope it didn't come across too hostile, but any of those face masks like N-95s will not stop the fumes. It will concentrate them into the nose and mouth because there's no charcoal filtering required for vapor. Dust and particulate only. And that was for everybody talking about it, not trying to be a safety freak just don't want anyone hurt. Or killed!
