I took out 7" but it is still a conservative chop. IMG_0998.JPG

    Mooneyham-Sharp

Great artwork done by @Dean Lowe

Does anyone have the Mooneyham-Sharp Lakewood community in So Cal photo without the blob added? The image was not taken by the person who added the blob to ruin the original photo.

    Hello,

As nice as the photo of the Mooneyham-Sharp 5 Window Coupe is with the posing, that added blob makes the picture not good. Here is another one taken during the same time period posted by @deanlowe and does not have the blob added.

No, that is not my 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery in the background. When we visited a friend that lived around the corner in the new master planned community, Lakewood, in So Cal , we saw the coupe and were in my 1958 black Impala at the time.

It was a surprise to drive around the corner and see the Ford coupe sitting in the driveway and on another time, in the garage. Lakewood was one of the first “planned” communities in So Cal. It was the start of the abundance of “Tract Home” building throughout all of California and the rest of the USA.

    1960 March

In March 1960, my brother and I saw the Mooneyham Sharp Coupe at the 2nd Bakersfield Smokers March Meet. 62 years ago, early this month.

    Hello,

Chet Herbert did nearly the impossible, he was involved in building a series of cool hot rods and streamliners, as well as contributing to the rise of plenty of famous drag racers and drag racing history. All while being confined to a wheel chair.

The series of the first full streamlining Bonneville race cars has been documented quite well by a number of periodicals. But, in looking at the history of “The Beast” named vehicles, this one is number 2. It is a chopped 27 T Ford Sedan.

And, the word chopped is not used lightly. I am not sure about the vision out of any window, let alone confined down a long three mile open area like Bonneville. It would still feel like a can of sardines trying to get out after the first ¼ mile. IOHO. All of the early streamlining/cut the wind blockage down aspect was evident in this chopped sedan build. It was not the most advanced design, but no one can fault the early pioneers of hot rod development and the need to go faster.

The Beast #2 was a difficult drawing as there were lots of perception and depth angles to consider. It was/is the strangest drawing to do on paper and computer. There were some days of giving up, until a better mood could be aroused.

But, the history of the Chet Herbert Cams “The Beast #2” was a part of So Cal history of hot rods and racing designs. It may be proportional or not. (including those rear wire wheels instead of Moon Discs.) YRMV
