It is my understanding that after Ed "Big Daddy" Roth passed away his son continued to honor his dad by selling signed posters and artifacts. Does anyone have a comparison of of Ed "Big Daddy" Roths genuine signature and the signature of his son? I have seen items signed: Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and others just signed signed "Roth" followed by a year date. such as '96. How can you distinguish between the two signatures so as to attribute the signature to either "Big Daddy" or his son? Thanks.
I have a poster he signed at the 50th Roadster show. It is Roth with the year. Mark's would have been on a more personal level so that could be the reason for the signature that most of us saw decades before.
If you're wondering what it was that Ed wrote to @Moriarity , I'm fairly certain that Mark just took a photo of a part of the letter, and there are some words missing.
ill say one thing, when you look at photos of big daddy working with fiberglass its no wonder he didnt live long....great man paid the price in my opinion....so many of the great ones...Bill Hines was amazing too...Just sayin....
Thanks for posting that signature of the Rat Fink master. I have these two prints signed at the KKOA National in Sarasota in 1996 , five years prior to Big Daddy's passing. I am told they are the signature of a person names "Newt" Newton who worked for "Big Daddy". That's why I was wondering about the authenticity of signatures. Here's more info. about "Newt". https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/ed-big-daddy-roths-signature-his-sons-signature.1255426/
I've got one that his son signed several of years ago at the Starbird show in Tulsa. I dig it out and compare.
Hey 1OT, If the photo color is still good, take it outside on an overcast day to keep the shadows/reflections down and take a regular photo with your digital camera. Like the old days, take several shots from varying distances to fill the frame or not. (tripod or Joby if you need clear, still frames.) Here is the same photo using a different look to the indoor photo. Jnaki @1oldtimer Note: There are a number of photo shops that can restore faded photos, but if the color is too far gone, not much can be done. YRMV
Saw Ed Roth in Waco,Texas winter car show. Very few people were there. Spent 15 minutes talking with “Big Daddy”—- very personable and full of life. I knew Roth was the “draw” for the show so I took a pic from Rod & Custom. I took a pic of Roth with a customer. I was there when he signed my pic of him and signed my son’s model with the real car in the background.
That's really cool. It's always interesting when you can introduce your kids to these icons of the world of cars. When my daughter was a teenager we would go to Autorama and she enjoyed talking to Gene Winfield when we would go. I bought her a baseball hat with Rat Fink on it one year and it was fun watching her try to explain to her friends what Rat Fink was about.
I met Roth in 1960 and he had his signature logo tattooed on his bicep. Dean Moon also had the Moon eyes logo tattooed on his bicep.
It depended on his mood. He didn't always sign Big Daddy Roth. Sometimes he just signed Roth, with a fly. Darryl has a bunch of stuff that Ed had signed, like faxes between the two of them, that always had some kind of goofy Roth figure or drawing. I have stuff signed by him, both ways.
There's a neat anecdote about that Ed Roth tattoo in Tom Wolfe's book "The Kandy Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby": A little while later we were sitting in a diner having a couple of sandwiches and Roth, who was wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt, pointed to this huge tattoo on his left arm that says "Roth" in the lettering style with the big serifs that he uses as his signature. "I had that done a couple of years ago because guys keep coming up to me saying, 'Are you Ed Roth?'" That book and the article has been mentioned before on the H.A.M.B. and if you can find a copy it's a great read. And my son has an autographed print of the "Wild Child" artwork that's signed "Big Daddy" Roth with the flies at the end.... totally cool!
He signed this for me at a DC World of Wheels. Hung on my office wall for 25 years. Just noticed the interesting copywrite at the lower right.
Got these two At the Houston Auto-Rama, when it was in the Astro Hall, late '90's-early 2000's can't remember exactly . Big booth lotsa merchandise, pick the 8 1/2x11 prints you wanted and he signed them right there, can't remember how much he charged. What ever it was, was well worth it.
