I copied this pic from the "save the gauges" thread. Has anyone ever seen another one of these? who made them? sure would like to find one, never knew they made em....

Real-time monitoring of points condition; not a bad idea!

    Now I want one!

That is mine, I’ll look tonight at the back and see if it has a make. If I remember correctly the back of gauge is plastic. Got it out of a $1 pile at a swap meet.

Back in the sixties, when I first became aware of hot rods and such, it seemed like people like to put more gauges in their cars. I know I liked gauges,I figured the more the better! I know in my old 430 equipped 55 Ford I had , oil , engine temp, generator, volts and transmission temp. Thought I was cool with all those gauges under my dash!
Since I was “ gauge happy” , I looked at gauges all the time! That is where I saw my first in dash dwell meter, but never owned one!

I never saw a DWELL one as a dash gauge.
I had a few Vac. and even a combo Vac & Boost that was stock in my Study dash< I thought that one was SUPER cool .

The gauge is cool but I’d like to know more about what’s at the other end of the wire. How does the sensor work?

I am sure it is hooked up like any other dwell meter....one wire to ground and a wire to the negative side of the coil.

Or I could be all wrong

Tell the GF ya can’t go to the movies so we’re just gonna hang at the hang out cause you’re almost out of dwell

I would guess they may have been in a distributor machine of some kind. Maybe even in some off brand dwell meter. Easy enough to remove and put in a dash.

  15. Do you need two gauges for dual points?

    or a toggle switch

Most distributors with dual points use the second set of points working in concert with the first set to produce a longer dwell, so there is only one total dwell. Only one gauge and no toggle switch

30 degrees per set and depending on how they are staggered on the breaker plate the total dwell is usually 36 or so degrees, so when you set them you put a pc of paper between the contacts on one set and set the other to 30, then repeat for the other set. when you take the paper out you read the total of both sets. so one dash gauge would be ok

I just adjusted each set with a feeler gauge.
Seems like I remember a distributor cap with dual point adjustment doors IF I remember correctly.

Might have been a j.c. Whitney item.

you can use a feeler gauge, but dwell is more accurate. If it is not a GM product and doesn't have windows in the cap, you can set dwell while cranking with the cap off

There is no brand name, it does say “Made in USA” on the back and also the gauge face along with a number (model#?). There are slots in the top so it would be back lit from a light above the gauge. It had a plastic lense and metal bezel. This is probably just a simple electric meter calibrated in a certain way to measure the dwell. We sort of got into this when we were considering making replacement control boxes for older Sun and Sterart-Warner tachometers. I'll talk to my partner about it; we can probably do it with a cheap voltmeter, a replacement face, and a resistor or two.

You could hook up a three way switch that would cancel out one to read the other in two positions with the third showing combined

Found this old amp gauge and I bet it was made by the same company. Same made in USA and same light slots....

Nope. Dual point distributors have both sets of points connected to a single terminal, so there's no way to use a 3-way switch to do what you're suggesting.
