Used one to shoot primer on my last project car. I might have to go grab one just in case. I wouldn't use them for paint myself as they're not a great gun for any decent paint work.

 

buy 10 of them and just throw them away when you are done.

 

I have used one to do flames and graphics with great success.
Well... great success for me at least.

 

Bought one last time they were on sale. All I can say is for ten bucks you get what you pay for.

I am an aspiring artist.
I have a lot of artist friends.
When one of them starts to talk about how good such-n-such expensive paint brush works I like to point out to them that the pre-historic ancients crawled into caves and laid on their backs with their mouths full of pigment and spit out some of the greatest mural art treasures ever.

THE SUCCESS OF THE ARTIST HAS LESS TO DO WITH THE TOOL AND MORE TO DO WITH THE ARTISTIC TALENT OF THE ARTIST.

 

I used one for a primer gun for several years with good results and threw it away when they went on sale and bought a new one. Not a great gun but works fine if you set it up right, painted a lot of chassis parts with mine and they came out fine.

 

I used one to paint the frame of my car and my firewall. It worked absolutely fine for that.

 

I planned on picking one up this weekend.

Just wish it had a bigger tip for the primer.

 

One thing I learned abut this gun and guns in general:
Clean all the little bits with aerosol carb cleaner to get out every last bit of residue.

 

I'm sooooo bad at painting, I use rattle cans mostly. That way I can blame it on the cans!

 

Dave are you sure you are not huffing the propellant??

I go back and forth with a guy on FB that buys them by the case and treats them as disposable. He turns out what looks like pretty presentable paint work with them.
They probably aren't for everyone but how much do you need to spend on a primer gun or a gun for work rig paint jobs.

 

This debate is eternal!! As with all tools, the main factor is the skill of the user. I once bought some cans of 1-Shot and the best brushes I could find and after 10s of hours of dedicated practice, watching hours of instructional videos, my pinstriping was not. Conversely, I have been working with good old purple guns for decades and came up with a dozen or so pretty nice paint jobs, including the candy lime gold job on my $246,000 Mysterion clone.

 

Hey Dave, that must be an Upstate NY "thing"...I'm one of those Rattle can jockeys as well. It's just easier...no compressor adjustments, no water in the lines and NO clean-up,

 

I bought one a while back that I still haven't used but now I really feel like I got something cool. Purple power.

 

One day I'll have to lay aside my Devilbiss JGA-502 and pick up a purple gun.

 

I had to paint my skid steer in a couple/three stages of assembly so just cleaned the one gun. I did buy a bunch more. I wish the garage was that picture clean now.

 

i just can't figure out how to make them work. i was a terror back when they made the non hvlp type but i can't get these hvlp guns to flow high volumn. the old ones put out a lot of paint with the over spray. i guess i am just to old to learn new tricks.

 

I got a couple of them from princess auto ( Canadian harbour freight )
Ours are red and blue but they look identical

painted hundreds of forklifts over the years think I’ve had the blue one 5 years now .

they are not “ show quality “ paint jobs but they come out friggin’ fantastic considering we use single stage and a 40 dollar gun !!!!!!!

 

I put that one down in 1992.

 

Put a regulator right at the gun. Start out with 40psi with the trigger pulled.

Adjust from there.

 

I'm in on the DeVillbiss too but mines a JGA-510. I've had it for so long I can't even remember where it came from.

 

That was in the model car stage of life. Working on them in my parents' house attic! And then there was the glue...

 

What do you mean no clean up? I can make just as much of a mess with rattle cans, and I still have to clean up my mess...

 

Sure now you did it. That damn White paste glue we had in grade school was out of my mind until you said glue. Now I got to go find some and see if it still tastes as good as it was back then!! And that explains all my issues today.

 

I wiped the gun down after one use and the “anodizing” wiped off. It was lacquer.

I could never get mine to spray worth a crap so I tossed it.
