While primarily a Lakes and Bonneville car, Fred Carillo's '27 did see a few passes on the drag strip. A Hot Rod cover car in July 1952, it was the fastest roadster @ 183+ mph. It's now under restoration in Baltimore by current owner Frank Morawski.
old Friday Art Hello, One of the most unusual, but very colorful rear engine roadsters on the drag racing scene in the early 60’s was the Maroon/Yellow flames version that ran locally at several So Cal dragstrips. We saw it in magazines and it was impressive. We were told it was fast, maybe not as fast as our favorite rear engine roadster, the Speed Sport Special 2, but fast nonetheless. Old Friday Art Holly Hedrich and driver, Bob McClure attacked the records as well as possible considering the competition. Enjoying flames as much as I have over the years, a colorful, tasteful application on the Maroon rear engine roadster is always a neat design. This multi-yellow flames against a maroon background made it stand out from any direction. Jnaki The Hedrich/McClure roadster went on to other paint designs, but this one version was the best... (As far as being colorful for eye catching attention.) The Hedrich-McClure rear engine roadster made believers out of a lot of people. There have been many versions of this modified roadster. This was the one that we saw in magazines during our time at the drag strips. There will always be similarities comparing the two top modified roadsters in drag racing. It reminded us of the Speed Sport Special that we saw in 1959-60. As the time capsules collide and years later there was a race to see who was the fastest on that day. Jnaki This is how we remember our first introduction to the famous Speed Sport Modified Roadster in 1959-60. Now after many years, the top modified roadsters were going to finally race each other. The results speak for themselves. The Speed Sport Modified Roadster was one of the first rear engine builds. They must have done something right as we never saw it get sideways or get out of control. This is how we remember the Speed Sport Roadster. Speed Sport close up and personal. (63 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH.) Speed Sport Roadster 2
