The 1949 olds 303 appears to be stock . It had its hands full . Fouled some plugs . Ran it . So much fun . Got beat by bangers and some flats . Beat some bangers and flatys! 3. Leave it to your friends not to record your wins. I realize it is so much more than just about winning. I think we need to build some sort of track here on the farm, looks like so much fun! Is it true that you can only run a car once at trog, next year you need to build a new car?

A lot of this culture revolves around stuff you really have to know and respect as it could take you out in a second...I have some knowledge about machining and have the utmost respect for Machinists...I have worked in tangent with them for years...Such an important element of go fast...and I'm sure many a Hotrodder knew how to run them machines...and then apply it to win the race...

Here`s a pic of the Merc and the famous Norm Koborg`s Golden Rod coupe which is still around Omaha today in a different build style. A 60`s style by the guy who bought it in the 1960`s. Last I knew it is still in primer. IMG_20220201_0001.jpg

In 1958 I was on the hunt for a project & spotted a 1933 Chevy 5w Master coupe a one owner with 29,000 miles in the local newspaper for $250, as I recall the owner was Koborg but spelled with a "K" my dad & I beat it out the door, it was everything the owner said it was, but too nice as I wanted a build project, but step aside son...since dad courted my mother in a 34 coupe he gladly took ownership & sadly later resold it in the mid 60's.... still around & last heard it had 36,000 miles on the clock. Always knew of the Golden rod & the Merc. pickup but not certain if the same family. While dad was employed at Roy Burdick's garage in So. Omaha recall him working on a similar Ford/Merc. conversion or that very car ???? can't really say.

Great story. Good memories to have with your dad. Koborg with a K I believe is the last name of the Golden Rod owners . My mistake on the spelling .

Dirt Car ! Thank you! I would like to learn more History about the Burdick’s shop . I have been by the structure north of L st . I heard a story about a NASCAR they build there in the 50s only be to be cheated at Daytona ? Would like to know more about that and tell that story . Do you by chance know the details ?

tdog ! Much has made print on the Burdick's long-distance trek to Daytona with the Holman/Moody T-bird originally built by Roy Burdick for son Bobby. Roy's brother Bud also saw track time as did Johnny Beauchamp out of Harlan Ia; Beauchamp nearly rewrote the history of the south-east NASCAR dominance when he unofficially won the inaugural 1959 Daytona 500, only to be denied the win days later over a controversial photo finish. At any rate quite a fete considering time & distance out of a small shop in the Midwest, in that honor Roy prominently lettered his cars " Built in Nebraska by farmers" Thanks, more ? Ron

The Omaha World Hearld & the Sun Newspaper kept close tap on the racing community in South Omaha & it goes without saying while Burdick's on 46 th. & J & the Kosiski's a stone's throw away at 48 th & L both brought prominent recognition to Nebraska in unlikely rebuilt unibody Ford Thunderbirds.

B0E5A32D-F461-42B3-988B-BECB4814CDAA.jpeg Mocking up headlights on the coupe . I like the extreme look of the passenger side . Need to see if three tires will clear when the front wheels turn.

  25. I have a few videos to catch up on, but this sure is quite a ride. The left headlight placement is bordering on sinister, I like it.

cant say if this is your dads car but my brother-in-law Duane Moffatt bought it in 1966 in Omaha. was red and had a 327. he still owns it. been rebuilt 2-3 times since. maybe another coincidence is that Duane always told us he bought a 390 from Burdicks that they ran at Daytona in 1959 or 60. Duane put it in a 54 Ford. guess it was a real sleeper & screamer. I never saw the 54 personally. 2017-06-28 23.00.16.jpg
