Great photo, thanks for posting that. The guy with the red hair is Wally, Herman’s younger brother and that appears to be Herman, RIP, by the right front fender.

    Hello,

For a long time, that photo and the ones in my films had puzzled me. I knew I had seen one, a single Hilborn Injector before, but, those tended to stay in the background of drag racing technology. As we all grew up seeing the newish two hole Hilborn Injectors and classic scoops on a bunch of drag racing vehicles, that we tended to forget that there was some experimental ideas going on before hand. It was just that the two port took the whole drag racing scene with a huge hit, that one tended to forget what came before.

The idea of a single huge Hilborn Injector was a new item developed at the request of Howard Johansen back then. It continued in several applications. I always learn several new things as I delve into drag racing history.

Donny Johansen at the 2017 Lion’s Dragstrip Museum Grand Opening conversation:
“… the diameter was a huge opening, but within a year, the size of the new twin injectors surpassed the diameter of the big single. So, the twin injector was more efficient….”

    upload_2022-2-20_3-44-54.png 1960 a 62 year tradition…
Thus, the popularity of the twin injectors and scoop started on a lot of race cars and continues into history as the first two port, top mounted injection system for a 671 supercharger.

But, one of the most unusual injectors was the Howard Cam Version that was a single, 3 inches in diameter model.
