A 13 year old kid dressed with the stylish blue nylon jacket, white T-shirt, Dickies with creases, and desert boots. Standard garb for Long Beach area hot rod/drag racing teenagers.(Levis were thrown in the mix, when the Dickies got dirty…)

    Hello,

The year was 1957 around November. My dad had just bought his new 1957 Buick Roadmaster 2 door sedan. After all of these years using and buying a 4 door sedan for the growing family, he wanted a two door. In looking at my brother’s new 1958 black Impala, which he had just purchased, my dad had a little envy going on with the 2 door sedan.

    upload_2019-6-2_4-28-40.png
Compared to the 1953 big, Buick, 4 door, two-tone sedan, the sleek (if it can be sleek) 1958 black Impala had it in droves over the big family Buick sedan. So, he took us around with him to purchase a new car. Of course we went to many different places, but we always ended up at the local Boulevard Buick on American Ave. (now, Long Beach Blvd. ) He immediately liked the two door Roadmaster sedan. My mom liked the convertible. If we had to make a choice, it would have been the 4 door hardtop sedan. We liked the idea of all windows rolled down creating a huge open air cave.

My dad stayed with the 2 door Buick and later, my mom told us that after the last vacation with the two big teens, we would eventually have our own cars, so they did not need a big 4 door sedan any longer. As they got “older” they never swayed about buying more Buick sedans (all two door models). Then in the later years, they were called, “Grandpa” cars. These days, when we see them at shows or cruising on the street, we get thrown back into our family history and its episodes.

Starting with a 1941 fastback Buick sedan up to a 1982 two door, every 4 years, a new Buick rolled into the driveway. (Except for his first ever car purchase in 1937.) Since then, it has been Buicks for 47 years.

Not me but my wife at three and again at 5o something, at her grandpa's gravesite. we just had to recreate the photo. Her Dad's 55 in the background back then, old photos 008.JPG 2014-06-21_17.09.12.jpg and mine in the recent pic. I wish I could have located the original car, but it is long gone.

Me in 1976 in my 64 Bonneville, 421 dual AFBs 4 speed hydro... Loved that car but was in trade school at the time and didn't have the money to do much with it. My neighbor gave me the P-22 intake with the AFBs and linkage, they worked perfectly right from the start! When I would nail the gas and downshift that hydro into that super low second, both AFB's would open all hell would brake loose! Man what a ride..

This is our 36 Ford drag car we built as 16-17 year old teenagers in my Grandpas garage. It was originally flathed powered and later swapped out for a 327. Raced at the Westhampton Drag Strip in the early sixties. I'm the skinny kid IMG_0928.JPG in the middle.

New to the site, so a bit late to post. At any rate, this is a pic of me and my first car, a '55 Olds 98 Holiday 2 Dr. This was somewhere about 1987. This was the old family car. They drove it until it wouldn't start anymore. My dad told me a couple years before this pic that if I could get it running, I could have it. It had worn out starter brushes. I remember spending hours pumping the flat tires up with a bicycle pump. I had to part ways with this car around 1989 when the fluid coupling decided it was going to be a zero stall converter, making it undrivable. In the 80's there was no internet to search, and shop mechanics would roll their eyes when I asked questions. I was the only Olds guy I knew, and nowhere to park a non driving rig, so sick to my stomach I ended up stuck having to sell it ($1,250). I still remember the S/N: 559A1240.
Just a few months ago I finally filled that 30 year old empty spot with a '55 Super 88 4 dr that I dragged home from a farmers field. 70390004.jpg

Here I am on my 1st birthday standing beside my Dad's '42 Hudson. In fact it was the 1st car I ever rode in. At the age of 3 days old I came home from the hospital in that Hudson.

  23. Me in the 1924 or thereabouts pale yellow Oldsmobile tourer at Tootgarook, Victoria, Australia. Also me washing the FJ Holden , same location. Must be about 1958. Comparing myself in both photos it looks like dad traded the Olds in for the Holden. I remember when i was about 15 years old i gave him hell for getting rid of both cars.
